Can someone explain why the schools are so poorly rated when the surrounding area is affluent? Does this part of Menlo Park have any chance of improving or is it a place to avoid? The location is very good, close to one of the jobs I am interviewing for.

Because students in this district come from East Palo Alto and east Menlo Park. Nothing wrong with these students, but they are mainly from socioeconomically disadvantaged demographics.

Here are the school profile for 2 elementary schools in Menlo Park. You can look at the details.

I doubt the schools will improve. I suspect people who live here and have the means will send their kids to private school.

That area has been gentrifying over the past 30 years.. it has gone from a dangerous inner-city suburb to something in line with East San Jose or Hayward. But it's still an impoverished part of the city that is badly lacking in services, compared with either of those cities.

after spending quite some time reviewing the stats jk88cal posted, I come to the conclusion that these schools are under-performing, even for the race/socioeconomic mix in the school.

the curious thing is the math scores at willow oaks, they seem to be an outlier, are higher than expected. why?
