Homicide down, but gains uneven in Bay Area crime - SFGate

Out of the 3 biggest cities, SJ has the most population, and the lowest number of violent crimes by far. SF has the same violent crime numbers as Oakland, but with 2x the population, you could say that SF is half as violent as Oakland. San Jose, meanwhile, with 2.5x the population of Oakland, has only half the number of violent crime as Oakland, so you can say that SJ is 1/5 as violent as Oakland.

Basically, San Francisco has twice the violent crime rate of San Jose, and Oakland has twice the violent crime rate of San Francisco.

By the way, SJ is the only city of the Big 3 to have a decrease in violent crime rate last year.

Keep in mind, SF has about 2x the number of police officers as SJ. Oakland has about 2/3 the number of police officers as SJ.

To me, it shows that SJ has a more productive police force AND a more peace-loving citizenry.
I'm sure a lot of the people bemoaning crime would prefer we go back to the days we were one of the top 3 safest cities in the US, for many years San Jose would be ranked as #1 safest big city in the US, relative to those days crime rate is significantly higher for a lot of crime type, though in terms of violent crimes it is really just the homicide rate that has gone up, it is mostly petty crime that has gone up, like car theft, robberies and so on, City-Data only has data up to 2012 though.

As of today, for 2014, Oakland has 73 homicides, SF has 37 homicides, and SJ has 31 homicides.

Still the safest big city in the Bay Area. With barely more police officers than Oakland, and less than half the police force of SF, I think we did alright.

So much for all the sensationalizing...

But Bobby, those 73 and 37 dead people are so much more gritty and urban...

Also, SJ has a larger population than either SF or Oakland (more than twice the size of Oakland, in fact), so on a per capita basis SJ did even better.

This has been a troubling time to say the least.

The majority of San Jose residents are peaceful and do take pride in our city. My hope is that the police will receive the respect many of them deserve while other cities are seeing so much distain for our laws and peace officers. Sam needs to be a strong leader to keep our city safe for all.

Our city will be safe if it's cops don't beat up its' citizens. Who pay their salaries.

It begins with citizens/residents obeying our laws and being respectful of each other. The election is over so it is a time to come together for each other's benefit.

As of today, the homicide rate for 2014 is as followed:

San Jose: 32
San Francisco: 45
Oakland: 84

San Jose is currently 12 homicides below its 2013 rate of 44. San Francisco is currently 1 homicide below its 2013 rate of 46. Oakland is currently 8 homicides below its 2013 rate of 92.

Damn it, SF and Oakland still beating us in this homicide increase thing. No matter how hard we tried, we could just never have enough murders as the other two cities do. Are we doing something wrong? Should we go to the SJPOA for advice?

*Healthy dose of sarcasm intended in case you did not notice*

I watched the last two counsil meetings and wonder whether Sam will be a one term mayor. I'm not sure he has the leadership skills some of the members do, but, hoping for the best for next year and beyond.
