We have a family of 5 and lived in a 3/1 house that was just under 1000 sqft. My boys shared a room and my daughter had her own room. It's doable.

It is more than enough. Your kids won't even know the difference between that or a 2000sqf home. Trust me I know because I lived through it growing up in a family of 4 (my sibling and I are 1 year apart).

What you should keep in mind, is that the weather is great nearly year round. So, you can spend a great deal of time in the yard or at the park, etc.

I moved last year from Santa Clara. I say go for it, and enjoy the yard. Houses don't feel so small when you can include the yard in your living space.

Thanks everyone for the replies! We decided to rent the house and I think it was a good decision. The house is very nice with a big and beautiful backyard, so we'll enjoy our time there.
