Oh God, there's so much horsesh** in the workplace around here.

I would really appreciate some responses to this.
I suggest you don't take any work whatsoever with you on your vacation.

As a result, work suddenly creeping close to or during vacation time would squarely be management's fault *and* responsibility to fix. If your work ethics is stellar during business hours, only a bad manager would undermine your recovery time. And working under a bad manager is bad for your health.
I gave a 3 month notice and finished all the tasks that were agreed upon and then some. Although its not what I wanted I now have to negotiate that I will get one task done during my vacation. I am up for a promotion and really don't want to do anything to decrease my chances.

80skeys- I agree that its horse-excrement on the part of the employer which is why I posted here.

And if you get promoted... you can look forward to even more of this.

I report to a Director who always works during "vacations." I could be up for Sr. Manager soon, not even sure I want it or aspire to my boss's job.

Promotion in SV basically means, "here you go, more money...now you can't complain or escape when we squeeze you for more."

I hate to be that guy, but is your manager of a certain ethnicity? I am asking this as a transplant myself.

In my experience it can depend on the individual.
My ex-coworker always had to work on her vacation. The boss set it as a stipulation for her to be out of the office. So she took her PTO and worked several hours a day while on vacation. Hawaii? Work? Home visiting family? Work.
I on the other hand never had this request made of me. Probably because he knew I wouldn't let it happen.
Needless to say, she quit before I did (and I ended up quitting too because you can imagine what the work environment was like with such a manager/company culture).
