What time is good for construction noise?
I am doing some home improvements in my SFH in a San Jose residential neighborhood.
I need to use an electric planer machine inside my garage, but it is loud as hell.
It is saturday now. Should I do it now, or take a day off work so I can complete this planing on a workday (Mo-Fri)?

Around here, I don't hear loud noise until at least 9 am weekends. (Lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers) . H occasionally uses noisy tools in the garage on weekends, usually in the afternoon. No one has complained, so they probably don't care. I'd be fine with loud noise 9am - 7pm, any day of the week, although not continuously.

That's painful. I get really pissed off especially on a weekend with loud noises before noon. I don't know who the hell gets up at 9 a.m. on a WEEKEND?! I don't even get up before 11 a.m. on weekdays. This is exactly why when I buy a house in the suburbs, though, I'm redoing the entire master bedroom walls and putting double dry wall with spacing and double studs, extra insulation, and getting it to STC 60+ with dual double pane windows and spacing between them. Because other people seem to think it's ok to make massive amounts of noise before noon, which it really isn't. I think it should be fine to make loud noises until midnight, but I don't do that out of respect for neighbors. I only wish it were shown back!

City of San Jose Municipal Code has the noise ordinances, so you can look those up, however, the answer is whatever doesn't unnecessarily disturb your neighbors. Because even if you are within the law , if your neighbors are angry with you, it doesn't help you in the long run.

I think you're fine to do it on a weekend, as long as not too early or late.

I think you may be in the minority, at least among people over 25 or so. It's certainly not unusual for people to start noisy weekend projects by around 10. And if you hire a contractor for a larger job, often they'll want to start work by 8am. Garbage trucks make plenty of racket as early as 6am. As far as I know, there are no official "quiet hours" in San Jose. There is a law against "unreasonable" noise at any hour, but I doubt that this would apply to construction or yard work during daylight hours. See for example:

But there are no quiet hours or noise curfews in San Jose. State law and city ordinances basically forbid disturbing noises in neighborhoods. The problem is in the interpretation of the laws. Here is what Code Enforcement's Jamie Matthews responded to your question by e-mail: "Although there is no specific restriction on doing yard work at a residence before 8 a.m., it is courteous to wait until after 8 a.m. before making noise. Starting noisy work before 8 a.m. can be disruptive and may reduce the chance of picking up additional clients in the neighborhood.

"San Jose Municipal Code Section 10.16.010 states that: 'No person shall disturb the peace, quiet and comfort of any neighborhood by creating therein any disturbing or unreasonably loud noise.'

"Any noise that is determined to be 'unreasonably loud' may be considered a disturbance by the police who respond based on availability, call volume and relative priority when reported to 311.

"It is a much better idea and good business, however just to limit early morning activities if it is bothering someone."

I don't know the law, but in my opinion anytime after 9 am before 8 pm is polite. Anytime after 8 am until 9 pm is acceptable but annoying. Anything earlier/past that is going to get you off my Christmas Cookie list (okay, joking...I'm not making cookies anyway!).

When I had napping babies the in-between hours drove me nuts, but I understood no one can please everyone.

My kid is almost three. The last time I slept past 7am was... do the math. Even when kiddo sleeps in these days, my body doesn't.
