Hi. My fiance and I are moving to the Bay Area for college at CSU East Bay. We have 2 large dogs. We have a budget of approximately $2500 a month. We want to live as close to the college as possible, however, are aware this might be challenging with our budget at also needing a yard for the dogs. We were thinking that the San Jose area would be good because we were told its more spread out, but are open to other suggestions. At this point we really don't know how picky we can be. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

I think it would be cheaper to rent a place to stay near CSU East Bay than in San Jose area. East Bay is traditionally cheaper than South Bay area and Peninsula. Do your search to know real time prices SF bay area housing, apartments, real estate, etc - craigslist and be aware of "criminal" cheap parts of Bay Area, for instance Alum Rock (not all but most part of it) in San Jose.

You should check with the Oakland forum.
SJ is super pricey and extraordinarily hard to find rentals with dogs anyway, I don't see the plus side to renting here and commuting across the bay.
