I grew up in the east Bay Area, recently lived for 10 years in Santa Clara. I moved away when I retired 2 years ago because I couldn't afford to retire in the area.

Now, I have the opportunity to get on the waiting list to move into an affordable apartment building in South San Jose. I don't know that area. The apartments are on Seven Trees Blvd, between Capitol Expressway and Senter. It's a low income family complex. I wouldn't have to worry about the rent increasing beyond my means, because rent would be a percentage of my SSI.

It's just a few miles from the Southside Community Center, which has classes for seniors, which I would love.

I have a truck, so don't need to use public transportation at this point in my life. I have a good friend in Sunnyvale, who I could drive to see. I would also end up in the same medical system that I was in before I moved away. All good reasons to move back to an area I know and love. I just don't know south San Jose.

I'd love some feedback on living in that area from those of you who know the area. Thanks.

I would say that area is not a *typical* South San Jose (suburb community, children, church) but more South-East San Jose that is not very good in terms of safety. A little bit depressive area but OK for some people. By the way, a lot of cheap and tasty Asian restaurants.

That neighborhood is really one of the least desirable in San Jose. Better said: one of the most undesirable.
I'd keep looking and waiting.

In terms of safety it is undesirable, but of course not so bad as Alum Rock/East of 101. For me, in terms of safety it feels pretty the same as residential part of SJ Downtown with much less homeless people but a little bit more thugs .

Thanks everyone. What about in terms of noise? I'm okay with low income, blue collar neighborhoods, including Mexican neighborhoods, as long as everyone isn't blasting their stereos at full volume on bad speakers. Been there. If it's just normal family noise, I'm okay with that.

I'll concur with the other posters. I wouldn't choose that area of San Jose. It's not the worst part of SJ, but isn't nice either.

In a low income complex on Seven Trees, or really anywhere, that's exactly what I would expect. The better 55+ option would be The Villages over in Evergreen, but not sure if that is within the budget. They are condos.

Thank you. Yes, I've decided against this particular property, in a large part because it's a family property, which means noisy kids. I did find some other 55+ affordable properties around San Jose and got on waiting lists for them. It will take longer, but I think I'll be happier.
