Well, they had the old Silicon Graphics buildings around there so it made sense when SG was downsizing and vacating offices. I don't think Page and Brin could have imagined that the company would grow to the size it became.

Plus, another big company was and is occupying much of North SJ --- it's called Cisco Systems.

A lot of Google employees live in San Francisco. Putting the office in North San Jose would make it close to impossible to hire anyone in San Francisco.

Is Google right now, or have they ever been, hurting for candidates for jobs? Not even close. They are smart people. BTW, they could buy and build a satellite campus in North SJ right freaking now if they wanted to, they have the money. They could do Oakland also. They're expanded all over the US. Notice how Apple just built a new HQ?

Is their lack of rail proximity here hurting their success? Not. At. All. Sure it hurts the region, but it's a completely incorrect way to analyze the problem.
