Some were lucky/smart enough to buy property they could afford. My daughter bought during the crash. So, her mortgage payment is much less than her rent would be.

Not in CA.
Living in shared housing is how we did it. It's how our son did it in Seattle. It's either make do where you live or move to where you can get what you can get.
