This was my reaction, too. With a gaggle of kids, you'd have to figure out how to generate a 2nd income, working from home. At some point, you two would have to realize you can't afford more kids, I would think. You can't see how having 4 is more expensive than 2? (Not to mention that 5th one on the way.) 2 kids can be accommodated in one bedroom, so you could make do with a 2-br. apt. 5 kids jumps it up to 4 bedrooms, even if the kids double up. I'm sure you can understand how that affects the price of the rent (or RE purchase) you need to pay, to house them.
Scientist? IDK about semiconductors, but has he considered New Mexico? Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs hire scientists, pay them well, and the COL is cheap in most places.

Your husband needs to make 2x what he makes now to live here. Try Phoenix (Chandler/Tempe), there are semiconductor jobs there too, and a COL you can afford.

Yeah cause everyone family in the bay area makes a minimum of $350k/yr. $150k is gonna be fine if they buy a $600k house @ 20% down that is like $3250 a month piti payment. Like a 30 dti is easily doable.

With a $150k/year income, how are they going to save the that 20% to put down on a house while currently paying rent and having 4 kids to take care of? Even living a frugal, debt-free lifestyle, do you realize how long that will actually take?
Where are they going to find a $600k house that's not a total dump within reasonable commuting distance to Fremont? A $600k single family home in the Bay Area is usually a small fixer-upper these days and is usually in an unsafe area and/or bad school district.

They said they don't care about schools they homeschool. Here a a couple of homes just from a quick search. Hayward/San leandro/San lorenzo are all blue collar towns. While $600k is the low end of prices of the bay area you can still find homes in that range. I assume that if they already have plans to buy a $600k home that they must have a savings or another house in another state to sell and use the equity to buy a house here.

renting is the way to go, you may hate it there, so you do not need a house ownership. If you like it, buy a house once you are more familiar with the area.
