So I hadn't heard about this but apparently the governor said no landscaping service? What does that have to do with Covid-19? My landscaping company wants me to pay them for no service. I'm trying to be a nice guy and I told them I would pay 50% for April only but nothing in May unless they come back to work. This is a company I've been using for more than 10 years.

I've used the same Mexican family for about 15 years to keep our landscape looking good. I offered to pay them for 'no service'. They wouldn't accept it. I made the same offer to our cleaning girls. They would not accept money for 'no service'. Mexicans are some of the most honest people in the USA.

What does your contract say? Do you have a contract or just verbal.

My gardener keeps coming. I pay month to month. I never short them if say one mont it rains and they can’t make it every week. I pay the month. Now if they just start not showing up out of the blue I’ll call the owner. Find out why. I use a little Mexican mom and pop joint but he busts his butt making sure my place looks good. Besides it’s not like it a ton of money. For all the work they do. I wouldn’t short him if he couldn’t show up for the month.

It has to do with Covid-19 because they want people staying at home. The lawn workers are likely from different families riding in the same truck, stopping for gas and snacks.

This is the example I use whenever there is a thread demanding employers give more paid time off. When on the employee side, many feel the wage is an entitlement to be received whether one worked or not and the employer needs to suck it up. Put them on the employer side (you, in this case) and now it's a feeling of why should you pay for something not received.

Do you get paid time off where you work?

That young lady could be their broker. Brokers always want to get paid. They won't get sick at their desk.

When I deal with trades people, I always try to deal with the person who actually does the work. Brokers can suck out a big part of the price you pay for a service.

Paid time off is something you negotiate. Yes I have it and when I used it up I don't then expect to get paid for no work. When I worked as a secretary back in college I didn't have sick time. It wasn't part of my package.

I pay someone to service my lawn. It's the job of the employer to give sick or vacation time. I already pay a big premium for their service.

Our cleaning lady told us she's going to work from home; she's going to call us & tell us what to do.

If you've worked with a company for 10 years, why wouldn't you try to help them out in a difficult time?

We're still paying our cleaners, the kids dance and gymnastics lessons, etc..... because we're fortunate enough to still have incomes, and we don't want local small businesses to go under and throw their employees out of work. And because we're decent human beings.
