Go to GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community to find out what the different schools rate by the education experts. You can find one school rates good, and another in the same district rates bad.

Evergreen school district is excellent - it's a newer area in the foothills around silver creek country club - also fremont has a patch of great schools along the foothills

I don't know of a single web site that covers all cities, but every individual school district I've checked has an address checker on their web site. For example, here is the one for SJ Unified:

San Jose Unified School District SchoolFinder

Try this Census site. It won't give you the exact schools an address goes to but it will tell you what school district you should next do a lookup in. This works for any address, not just San Jose.

Also for the people asking about when to enroll, I live in the Cupertino school district and they started enrollment LAST WEEK. It's been ages since I signed up for Kindergarten (my kids are in high school) but I think enrollment runs two weeks, with the lotteries for the alternative schools taking enrollments this week (after you register at the neighborhood school last week). I think, but I will not swear to it, that you can also register for neighborhood schools this week, but after this week, everyone registering goes to the back of this early line.

There are a number of areas with good elementary schools, but the middle and high schools with good scores are harder to find. There are very few with high school scores over 850. The other odd thing for me, coming from NJ, is the lack of private, nonreligious schools around here.

schoolandhousing.com is pretty accurate, and you can type in the address.

Good luck!
