"The City" is a Nor Cal thing. SF is the most important city in the Bay Area or in Nor Cal. SJ is a bigger city than SF, but city pop. is misleading.

Well, it's zoned to San Francisco, so politically yes it is in SF County. But it physically borders San Bruno and Millbrae in San Mateo County.

San Francisco historically is known as "The City By the Bay," but now people just say, "The City."

Krudmonk said it best, if you're really looking for the reason SF has been called "the city" [lower case, though] for over a hundred years, imo. Think about it, what happened in 1906 that caused it to be the center of statewide - and worldwide - conversation for months, or even years?

At that time, even though LA was much larger in land mass, SF was the dominant city in CA. And so it began. Over the years folks living in smaller towns and rural areas of CA developed the habit of referring to the two as "LA" and "the city".

But it takes someone really, really old to remember that. I need a nap.

When you drive by the SF downtown and look at the skyline it is much more dense and has more tall skyscraper type buildings than any other city in California, while other cities may have more people, SF is definitely the most urban city in the entire state.

SF is one of the most famous cities in the world and the most popular in Northern Ca. Not many people go to San Jose for tourism. San Jose feels like a suburb. Just like Irvine or Santa Ana , medium height spread out buildings and no real density like SF, Chicago or NYC.

So San Jose is of uniform density over 175 square miles? It is just like two cities that make up about half of its population combined? Those two cities could easily make up part of San Jose because it does have some suburban development within city limits, but they are most definitely not directly comparable. Just admit that you're a bigot and have no real basis for your words. You have a preconceived notion of the place and you pull evidence out of the air to support your claims.

By the way, a large majority of cities don't have the density of those last three you named. Are they not actually cities? Call Merriam-Webster and let them know you've redefined the word.

If not for Stanford and SiliconValley, SF "The City" would be about as laughable a tourist town w/low-wage jobs as Miami, etc....but w/much weaker nightlife....and much higher inc taxes...
Huh??? You do realize that "Silicon Valley" has only existed for about 15 years, right? So I think your points are moot, since SF has always been THE CITY, even back when I was here in the early 1980s. It's just the closest thing to a major metropolitan city up here, nothing more nothing less. Any state you visit will have their city, regardless of the size or national impact... even North Dakota probably refers to Bismarck as "the city," and I'd hardly call that a hub of activity compared to NYC, LA, and so forth.

P.S. And I do realize that San Jose has a larger population, but as others have pointed out, it's more like a huge suburb... no skyscrapers, fewer sports teams, activities, etc.

Population, skylines, etc may be significant to clueless tourists...

Would look at any urban region in terms of where the economy is based in terms of wealth creation and high-income jobs...esp where powerful industries like finance and tech choose to locate....recall that most leading tech cos. and hedge funds are <<25yo....

In SF region, most of economy sits in a bunch of nondescript office parks stretching from RedwoodShores, MenloPk through MtnView, Cupertino, down to SJ....no one town has a monopoly....city of SF has a few major hedge funds/pvt equity shops, but almost none are in Pyramid/BkAmerica tower....

Most powerful elements of LA's economy are based in the BeverlyHills-CenturyCity area, in nondescript office bldgs....

Chicago is prob the most traditional city in US, as most powerful parts of its economy are based in Loop area....but leading hedge funds in Chic aren't in SearsTwr/Hancock...

NYC's economy primarily sits in MidtownManhattan (in a few 30-50yo unremarkable office bldgs; EmpStateBldg, RockCtr, etc have no notable hedge funds/private equity shops) and in Greenwich, which, like SiliconValley, is a bunch of boring suburban office bldgs w/major hedge funds, instead of tech cos. and VC firms....

Many billionaires across US choose to work in nondescript office bldgs, often in low-profile suburban settings, far from where most tourists venture....
