you sound pretty bitter towards immigrants... illegals i can understand but what do you have against legal immigrants and foreigners? sounds like you'd prefer a place where everyone looks the same.

I do not see the post as bitter but just stating the truth in a modern America where the business community has pushed to allow a huge number of immigrants who now dominate certain fields of work and thus many white or black native Americans are not allowed to work in these fields. All jobs should be open to all people.

The only good thing that can be seen in this shift change is, kids today are being persuaded to go to college or post high school training more than ever before. Just a high school diploma doesn't prepare them for the workforce anymore. In the 70's, a boy could graduate from high school, get married in a few years, have kids and support his family working at a plant. That is no longer happening. The world has changed. As a result, we may have more educated society.

Everyone does look the same where I live. They are all brunette, with dark skin and eyes. Do I prefer it? No. Diversity means a variety of ethinicities and races. Not just one.

Hi,
Glad everything is settled for you! My husband and I were opposite, we lived in Ohio and he is a Software Engineer, hardly any jobs for him in Ohio. We moved to Silicon Valley, as an RN I can work anywhere, but the pay is fabulous for RN's here (still doesn't make up for housing costs though).

Cost of living is very high. We moved back to Ohio in 2006 (when housing costs were still rising) and we just moved back because we missed it and costs are declining.

My mother in law would love to move here, but she too works in a factory and there just aren't jobs here for her, lots of factory jobs in Ohio though.

Good luck in PA!

I would say Texasturkey's comments about there bing no middle class in CA are somewhat exaggerated, but not by much.

I grew up in San Jose and moved to AZ . Although I adore San Jose its just no the same as years ago. It is way over priced and really crowded now. The two great things about San Jose, The weather is awesome and the freeway system in San jose enables you to get just about any place in 20min or less. We had to leave cause the cost of living was out of control. Why does he want to go back so bad? My brother is out there and just told me this weekend his friend cant find a job because for every person applying for positions there are at least 30 going for that same position. You do have to keep in mind that the houses for the most part are over 20 to 30 yrs old and not in great shape with a cost from 450,000 and above. Good Luck!

I am in your same situation, but moved to LV instead of AZ. The way I'm living here in So. Nevada, I do not think I could go back to San Jose. Maybe if someone gave me a house and a job and some $$$. Then I'll think about it

If I had the chance to work doing what you do, I probably would have not gone to college either. You can afford to house, clothe, feed yourself and your family. That is what it's about, right? Here in Southern CA, a middle class European-American would apply for a job like that and would be to that since he/she can speak English, they need to apply for another job and let the Espanol workers have those jobs. It happened to my Mom after my Dad became ill. Reverse discrimination? Socialism? Who knows? It is like: "We come from Mexico and do these jobs, you go to college and and do those jobs". People should not be limited or directed on what career path to follow because of their natural orgin. Working in a plant is a good job. I wouldn't mind it at all. Nor, do I think I am above it. A lot of people say that CA will fall apart if it weren't for immigant/foreigner labor. I differ on that. You work in TN in a plant. People in CA should go to ID, WV, IA, KS, or UT and they will European-Americans working at entry level, manufacturing and unskilled labor jobs. So the jobs are being done.

I can't afford to keep going to school. I wanted to get my MA Degree and ECSE Credential. But, that is going to get put on hold. I am older now (Older than you (LOL) and I need to get a higher paying job or work 2 jobs in order to finance my move. The only people that are doing well here are the wealthy. Everyone else is struggling to try to look like they are. The rest are in panhandlers or in jail. No middle class here. Too fast paced for me. I am out. Good Luck to you!
For the most part, the manufacturing jobs in CA are going to the people who can be paid the least amount of money for the most production. That's why some of the jobs would end up overseas - turns out that poor immigrants are fitting the bill the best. And on the other end of the spectrum, employers are looking for the most experienced or educated people for the higher-end tech positions. And sadly, highly educated immigrants are starting to take more and more of those jobs too.

The American worker is in a position where he/she needs to be better educated and more flexible to keep up with changing business needs and demands in the US. The lower end jobs are going to be filled with cheap labor, usually with immigrant workers. That's not new though. Immigrant labor has been a major part of how this country has always functioned from the beginning - and it's how most major economic powers have always functioned. It's the higher end jobs that we need to educate our children to be prepared for. Not so they can be rich, but so that they can get ahead and be prepared to change with the demand of the markets. The days of working for one company and one industry until retirement are gone. Markets are changing much faster than they were 30 years ago. We need to keep up.

It's easy to look at immigrants and be bitter that they're taking the jobs. But we live in a capitalist society and businesses will always look for the best and the cheapest solution for their needs. That's how this country is designed to work. And it's even more important for businesses now that we are more dependent on a global economy. We need to be better educated and diversified. We need to stop putting blame on immigrants for taking the jobs and take a good look at why they're getting hired instead of us. The answer is usually more production for a cheaper wage, or just one or the other. I think if we just put more effort into improving ourselves we'd be better off.

San Jose is an ok place to live if you and your spouse make a combined income of around 200k/yr. The salary of an engineer is roughly that. But that income will only get you into a mediocre, small home. You really need an income of about 350k+/yr and lots of down-payment cash to afford a nicer house in a nice neighborhood like Los Gatos.
