I am contemplating a move within the next year. This question is mostly for those who have lived in both areas, but anyone is welcome to answer.

Which location would be better to live in in terms of safety, job opportunities (i have a degree in web design), and affordable housing (keeping in mind the ratio of income to cost of living).

I have a little boy (6 years old), so I am hoping to be near good schools.

And any other tips or advice are welcome as well.

Thank you!

Really depends upon specific career opportunity; income level; and location of office (commute time/hassles)....

Generally, SiliconValley for a family is far more expensive than NYC's Scarsdale/Greenwich...both steeper housing costs and lack of safe, competent public schools, requiring pvt schools for many...

Manhattan is notably more costly than City of SF...

SiliconValley commutes are far easier than intra-Manhattan or NYC region commutes....and the near-perfect weather (unlike NYC) allows the frugal to save on costs/time waste of needed "escape" trips from NYC's congestion/weather...

From a career perspective, need to judge value of being located in world's tech epicenter....SV dominates tech more than even Manhattan/Greenwich dominate world's financial industry...
