Hi. I'm posting several of these threads in different cities. We'll be coming to San Jose on holiday later in the year. Is it a city with fair public transport or do we need to hire a car? Not sure which area we'll be staying yet.
Cheers

Get a car. If I were to do my commute by public transport, it would take 2 hours in each direction, and it doesn't even leave San Jose!

If you're staying at a hotel downtown or in the vicinity, VTA could get you where you need to go. Sonarrat is out in Evergreen (I believe) so it's much less useful. I would get a car just for the trips into the hills and such, though.

The service in Evergreen is typical of VTA in San Jose though. The lines center around major hubs, usually a mall in an area with severe traffic problems, which makes every commute a bog-slow nightmare. And then the buses just run on the busiest and most congested roads regardless of where the population is or where the jobs are. And when they do hit it right - as with the 23, which carries thousands of people to and from Valley Fair and Santana Row - you get buses so overloaded that the one 30 minutes behind will catch and pass it, because service isn't frequent enough.

Go to the VTA website to see if the buses/Light Rail/Caltrain will get you where you want to go. This is a massive sprawlsville, so planning these things before deciding is a good idea.

Should you use public transportation while on vacation in this place?

In general, public transport in San Jose is lousy. If you are strictly staying somewhere downtown and don't plan on leaving the downtown area, then public transport is fine. But most things in this area are all sprawled out, so you will probably end up renting a car.

Reading "Your tax dollars go into cleaning this bus" on a VTA bus absolutely cracked me up If only they'd put that on Atlanta's marta buses. Or even on BART.

They are clean, whether they get you where you want or not. MUNI in SF, on the other hand, has some serious "clean" issues.
