I lived in Redwood City on Jefferson Ave for a little while. It would have been great if I was in a single family home, but the apartments are trashy, decrepit, and full of nasty characters with no concept of peace and quiet. And that was in a sleepy residential westside area, not downtown.

You are going to have a hard time in any of these locations on that salary wanting to live alone in a one bedroom. A studio may be an option. Even living frugally, it's harder than you might think. SF is too expensive unless you want roommates. I wouldn't recommend Sunnyvale, San Mateo, or Santa Clara. They are just boring places to live. Palo Alto would be a decent option for you. There is a little bit of a nightlife, and plenty of restaurants, shops, etc. Second choice would probably be downtown Mountain View.

I would suggest you also contact your company's relocation department for their recommendations. You can find good info at City-Data as well as Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitors sites is not allowed but at the end of the day it is how you want to live. I want to leave this area because of the high cost of living and taxes but you are young and should experience all you can. To make the best choice for you, I would recommend staying in a long term hotel for a month or so before signing any lease agreeement. Only you can decide how to balance your new job and relationship so take your time and keep your options open. Where is your boyfriend in this process? Don't forget to check out the crime rates for areas you consider. Most of all - have fun and enjoy!
