What are the options for high speed Internet access in Palo Alto? I am having a billing dispute with Comcast (they billed me for a service call after telling me when I scheduled it there would be no charge) and I would like to consider the possibility of switching providers.

I watch a lot of movies online so it has to be fairly fast. I don't have or want landline phone service (I use a cell phone exclusively for my phone needs).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or experience.

As far as I know, the only other option is DSL, and there is no DSL service that will not force you to get an AT&T landline.

There is one other cable option, RCA I believe... my friends in San Mateo use them, so I can't guarantee it's available in SC County. But you might look into it! I'll get back to you if I discover I'm wrong on the name.

Any developments here in the last couple of years? I'm still only seeing Comcast and AT+T as high-speed internet options in Palo Alto.

Depends on what you deem "high-speed". There's also mobile broadband that uses 3G service, comparable to low end of DSL. I haven't tried it in the bay area myself. Used it in another state while traveling/vacationing, and find it is better than dial up but still slower than basic DSL.

There are options for prepaid (no contract) or subcription service. Prepaid from Virgin Mobile.

Actually, I have DSL from AT&T and I didn't have to get a landline. (San Jose, so I'm guessing this would be available in Palo Alto too.) They just activate the phone jack and you can plug the wire between that & the modem. I recommend the OP check it out.

That phone jack is your landline. You are getting your DSL through AT&T's wires. Generally you have two different wires coming into your house. One belongs to AT&T and the other belongs to Comcast. So your choices for high speed internet comes down to AT&T, Comcast, or some mobile broadband service.

Re: AT+T - you can get DSL through their wires without also having a landline, but they charge more for that. If you use them for local phone service the DSL package becomes about $20/month cheaper.

There are several independent providers of dsl service like Sonic.

Services for Home (Sonic.net)

Raw Bandwidth Communications, Inc.

Net Vista

LMi.net: Berkeley's Local Green Solar-Powered Internet Service Provider

The phone jack is where the landline would be, so you have to have the jack in the house but you don't have to buy landline service and pay the extra $20-ish/month is what I'm saying.
