Hey Coyoteskye can you elaborate more on "weird" I think I know what you are referring to but want some examples. Some of the people I've encountered while in Felton and Scotts Valley seemed more secluded and didn't like interacting with people so they seemed less friendly which isn't so bad I like to be some what secluded but it does give an over all impression. Also I noticed a lot of scary "hillbilly" types who looked a little rough rooming the streets probably living on government assistance. You find that any where though even more so then I am used to over here in San Jose well the areas I can afford to live in anyway. So I'm not totally bothered but wouldn't want to be surrounded by that sort of crowd and I wonder if the less expensive houses out there would attract that type of cliental. Just like here there are "good" areas and "bad" areas I would like to not have to deal with any "bad" areas where ever I end up buying a house.

well, hmmmm, i'm weird myself but i'm heartful and caring and completely non-threatening and can pass easily for a semi-conventional person if i choose to.
that's why i live in santa cruz ... 'cause i feel comfortable being myself here as do most people.
ummm, it's just a feeling up there ... yeah, a lack of friendliness .... kind of exclusionary ... enclosed or closed (i'm speaking very generally and specifically about the particular feeling i get at times).
santa cruz and the santa cruz mountains are intense ... the nature is intense and the energy is very strong and .... hard to explain and i'm not that clear about it myself.
there's some bad-asses up there.
i believe at one time (and maybe still), there was quite a strong presence of white supremisists in, i think, boulder creek (don't quote me on that).
but then again there's a beautiful buddhist center in boulder creek as well.
there are good people of course.
i dunno ... it's just not my favorite place.
i enjoy going there when i have to just for a change of scenery and to experience things inland a bit but i'm always glad to leave quite honestly.
when i first arrived in santa cruz quite a few years ago i thought it was cool up there on first glance .... funky, small town, etc. and i thought i might wanna live up there since the rents are a bit less than in santa cruz (but not by much actually) but then as i experienced it more i realized i didn't really like it.
i'd rather live in parts of watsonville (and there are parts that are just fine) rather than up there.
so that's my very subjective and somewhat foggy explanation of my experience of the vibe up there.
the thing that i really like about santa cruz county is that it's possible to live in a very rural and private area but without feeling cut-off and too remote.
if i'm going to live in a more secluded place, i want it to be friendly and open hearted as well ... welcoming.
we all need to feel welcome ... at least i do.

Felton is pretty dark under the trees, which are everywhere, so you have to appreciate the (rain)forest life. Kind of cool, unless one gets depressed in such conditions. Boulder Creek is a bit more relaxed, open (can actually see the sun sometimes), and friendly. Nice little main street as well. Not sure about the Klan, but where there are funky mountain towns, there are funky mountain people somewhere deep in the hills as well. But the funk is generally good.

Another avenue to peruse may be the places just off either 17 or Summit Road. I used to live on Brush Road right off 17, and it was a great daily escape after work. Seventeen acres, valley view, fairly low rent. Some people I knew rented from a lady who owns the whole area at the bottom of 17 that includes the old Cats restaurant and most of the hillside behind it. There are people up in Redwood Estates who can be helpful in regards housing questions, if you deftly strike up the conversation at the store or whatever is in the place across the street. RE isn't all that bad, BTW, except it is a culture clash between the old logger families and new money, like West Virginia meets San Mateo.

I know this is an old post, but, MAN OH MAN! Felton is a great place to live. Not weird at all and there are many very friendly people who live there. No weirder than Santa Cruz (come on, Santa Cruz is known for its weirdness). I've raised my son in Felton. I moved away due to happenstance about 10 years ago, but returned to be near my son who recently passed away. I'm renting in Scotts Valley at this time, because of what was available for me at the time, but much prefer to live in Felton.

How about for a single girl? I'm thinking of living up there because it's quiet, beautiful, and tend to get more work done on the bus than in my room, so the commute is no big deal. I've heard there's a lot of bikers up there though, and there's been a few random murders in the past...

I love Felton....I went up there a few years ago during a camping trip at Henry Cowle (sp?) Redwoods State Park. As it turned out I was the only one who thought camping meant actually making a fire and cooking yourself :P. We went to a Chinese restaurant there that had phenomenal vegetarian orange chicken. Also went to a really awesome breakfast place. I can't recall the names of either. Loved the vibe and scenery there. I enjoyed some amazing views of the sun setting behind the pine trees on the mountains...it seemed like a very small community though. I don't know if I could live there unless my life was mostly oriented towards outdoor activities.

Ah, thanks for correcting me. I knew I botched it
