I'm retired and am looking to buy a house in the $550-$600 range.

Which of these neighborhoods would you recommend? Got any good reasons?

Those are all nice areas to live in - $550-$600K might be light though unless you're looking for a small place (I don't believe that home prices have gone that far down in those four areas). What type of home are you looking for?

I'm looking for something in the 1,200-1,500 s.f. range. I've seen a number of houses in the Cambrian Park area that are possibilities.

I like the Cambrian area but I'd like to be closer to the Campbell/Los Gatos side (Union/Bascom). The 95124 zip code has some good schools so it's a nice area for families.

Funny - I grew up in 95124, longer ago than I care to admit. South San Jose, Almaden Valley, etc., were growing up too and Cambrian was the wrong side of the tracks then, barely a notch up from the then ill reputed East Side.

What's the East Side become, an affordable family area or gang central?

In general, it's gotten worse. West Side way better than East Side
