I would like to know how long it takes to commute from San Ramon/Dublin area to Sunnyvale and the fastest routes to get there. I currently work in the Sunnyvale area and am thinking about relocating to San Ramon/Dublin because my wives sister and husband live there and she want's the kids to grow up together and go to the schools there. My wife doesn't like it in San Jose and we've been here for years, would this be a smart move or should we stay in San Jose.

Your kids might see their cousins more, but they'll see a lot less of you, and when they do see you, you'll be decompressing from being in all that traffic.

Long commutes make people miserable. And quite frankly, driving that distance every day is dangerous because it greatly increases your risk of being in an accident. I wouldn't do it.

Since you already live in the area why don't you just drive to San Ramon from your exact location after work and see how long it takes? The 680 is the only way to go and that's why the traffic in that direction is horrible. Signing up for a 80 mile roundtrip commute does not sound like a great way to improve quality of life.

As I noted on the same thread on the SF forum, you'd have some company doing that commute.

For public transpo, you'd be talking BART to Fremont, then buses to VTA light rail (or depending where in S'vale, just more buses). Long, long, nasty commute using public transpo.

Actually, I THINK you could take the ACE train to the stop on Tasman and then pick up the light rail there. Still pretty rough though.

511.org should cover the details of that since Pleasanton is consider part of the greater Bay Area.

Forgot about that, that is true. That would actually be better than BART to AC to VTA.

Probably would be ever so slightly worse timewise than driving on the balance but on a day with a good winter storm ... driving would take forever.

That commute would be insane. I suggest you let your wife do it, and you can stay at home with the kids.
