That's an interesting expression. Is there a California story attached to it?

As for friends, of all the places we have lived in this wonderful country, we never had as many really good friends as we had in NM.

I am sure the OP feels bad about backing out, but we have to do what is best and sometimes it isn't always popular.

Yep, this happened to my wife and I when we first moved to CO. We found what we thought was the perfect house on the market and offered full listing price. But the buyer backed out at the last minute and decided not to sell. That definately seemed rude to us at the time. I have heard that some ppl do this just to see what offers they may get. But they are only mildly interested in selling if at all. regardless it worked out for us in the end and we found a nicer home. And it sounds like the OP made the right choice for now even if a little late in the decision process. There are many factors which must be weighed and they are different for each family.

I agree with Treedonkey in that proximity to family is a big factor which sometimes gets underestimated in that decision. Flying for the holidays, etc... is both expensive and never the same as living closer by. But if members are all scattered to the four winds anyway then of course it is not as big of a consideration. My wife's father and his wife are thinking of moving back to CA now to be closer to grandkids. And it was a driving factor for our return as well. So it definately plays a part.

we are close to 2 of our grandkids plus our great granddaughter who will soon be three. Our daughter and son in law will be buying a home here this weekend. It will start out as sorta a vacation home so they can be here more often. When retirement comes for them; depending on job security etc they will make this their permanent some. Right now, it is about a 6 to 61/2 hour drive from here to Dallas.

This is an expression that I find myself using two or three times a month.

It's a "dicho" that some Spanish speakers use when they attempt to do something that will benefit others and end up doing just the opposite.

For instance, my sweetie was preparing dinner the other night. I offered to set the table and ended up dropping (and breaking) two of our favorite soup bowls.
