Ditto regarding the East Bay. Best value for money if you don't have to commute across a bridge or to the South Bay.

HELP- My husband is considering taking a job in San Jose. We are from the Mid West and completely clueless about San Jose. I have done a small amount of research about rental housing market in San Jose. “Ouch” We do have 4 kids and I am very worried about the schools as well. Can someone suggest a few areas that offer good school districts and rental homes that are not bank breaking? Thank you for any advice

Unfortunately, the is a high demand for house rentals in the good school districts, especially those within easy commuting distance.

Perhaps if you state what your budget, the kid's age range and commuting tolerance, people on the board could give you good suggestions.

Funny, in kind of a depressing way, to see what the home prices were when this thread started.

I thought some of the numbers up the thread were a bit low even for back in 2009. A friend of mine rented a 3 bedroom older ranch style home in the Mission San Jose school district of Fremont back then..I am quite sure it was around $3000 if not more.

I'm looking at a relocation to the Bay Area also. Some days I'll be working in San Francisco others in San Jose and possibly Gilroy though much less often. So midway between sounds about right. While I'd prefer to stay on the peninsula between SF & SJ my $1500.-1700. p/mo budget probably makes Hayward,San Leandro, Newark areas more realistic as posters mention. Are there tolls on the bridge (bridge name unknown marked Rt 92 on the map) One way or both? I would suppose there are some sort of passes available to discount this but I'm not certain. Can I expect about 1 hr. into SF from these areas? About the same to San Jose south on 880? I've never been to these areas either any feedback helps. Additionally we are 55&, any hint on communities for that age bracket would also help. thanks

Newark is a good candidate.

1. Take BART from Fremont BART station to San Francisco downtown area.
2. Take Dumbarton Bridge (one way toll) to the peninsula.
3. Take I-880 to San Jose or Gilroy.

$2000 for a 3/4 bedroom single family house in a safe neighborhood.

Tolls are one-way on the bridges.
Fremont/Newark sound like good ideas for your situation. You can take BART to SF and drive to Gilroy- live near 680 and you can avoid much of the general traffic into Silicon Valley mornings.
