I am a nurse that is relocating with children to the monterey peninsula area. I need help deciding which area would be best for the children. I have been looking at monterey, carmel and the aptos, corrilitas areas. They are all beautiful...I have a son that is very interested in competitive basketball and football programs. The other children are in grade school. Where is the best area to raise a family and feel safe letting them explore. Any advice would be beneficial.

I do wish you the best of luck, for as beautiful as the Monterey Bay area, it is also rather cost prohibitive. A typical rule is the closer you are to the water, and if you can see it from your residence, the more expensive it will be. To gather an idea of costs, I suggest both http://monterey.craigslist.org and http://www.craigslist.org/sby to see about housing costs for both North and South Monterey Bay. Depending on whether you already have employment and the type of nursing; here's a list of local hospitals:

* Monterey County *

Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP, http://www.chomp.org) - Located in the hills between Monterey, Carmel, and the Skyline Forest. Nice area but more expensive than others. Possible to commute from Seaside/Marina to save on rent but not sure about the school districts.

Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital (SVMH, http://www.svmh.com) - Located in South Salinas. A ways away (20-30 minutes) from the ocean, but decent location off of Highway 101 and close to major shopping.

Natividad Medical Center (http://www.natividad.com) - Also located in Salinas, up towards the Northern part. Affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco.

* Santa Cruz County *

Watsonville Community Hospital (http://www.watsonvillehospital.com) - Watsonville is located halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey off Highway 1. Home to companies such as Granite Construction and West Marine.

Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital (http://www.dominicanhospital.org) - Services the communities of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, and surrounding areas.

I hope you can use this as a start. Add some more details to your situation, such as general area you are leaving and what type of area you are looking for (middle-class, money's no object, lots of parks, etc.) and I'll try to pinpoint more target areas.

Good luck!

Default Still weighing the options..

Thanks for replying... My family is from a farming background. We are selling some farms in the midwest and relocating. But, I would say that we would be considered middle class. I am most concerned about the transferring my highschool boy. I have looked at Palma, carmel, and aptos high schools. I would like a school that not only teaches the children, but takes an interest in thier personal growth as well. I will be working either at Watsonville community or CHOMP. Just trying to make the decision. Thank you.

A good match for your son might be Anzar High School, near San Juan Bautista. It's small, with a genuine sense of community.

Watsonville is a great community as well as Santa Cruz for relocated midwesterners (I being on myself).. The people are are really friendly and it has quite the ¨small-town¨ atmosphere... I think you will like it...

As far as hospitals... Dominican would be my first choice and I've known plenty of moms who have had their children there happily... Medical care in California is a problem, but that hospital seems to do well with the maternity aspect... It's finding a general practitioner that can be almost impossible... and the insurance situation (HMO/PPO, namely Blue Cross of California9 is a complete joke.

There a plenty of good schools in the Santa Cruz/ Watsonville area... Real estate is much much cheaper in Watsonville. I have a lot of friends that live there.

Well, hope that helped...

Chris

I live on the Monterey Peninsula and work in the School District. What the writers have said regarding housing prices is correct...they're extremely high. Pacific Grove would be an excellent choice for you. It is a very small and lovely place to raise children. One high school, goods sports. It is advertised as "America's Last Home Town" and it lives up to the claim pretty much. It is only about 3 or 4 miles to the Community Hospital from the center of town.
