Here's a link to craigslist ... rentals in Mountain View, etc. ... so you can get a sense of things.
SF bay area apts/housing for rent classifieds "mountain view" - craigslist
Then you can inquire about particular neighborhoods, school districts, etc..
Welcome in advance to California and to the ridiculously high rents of Silicon Valley!

Need an idea of budget and housing needs before we can steer you in the right direction.. California is a "drive until you qualify" kind of place. Many thousands of people endure awful commutes for the sake of their families in the Bay Area, like migratory birds who want to lay their eggs in just the right environment. There's no easy answer to your question, because "affordable" is a relative term. You might as well ask how high is the sky.

What's that you say? A company is relocating FROM out of state TO California? I think you might cause certain City-Data members' heads to explode when they read that, because it goes completely against their ideology/worldview.

Do you mind sharing the name of your company, maybe by PM if you'd rather not post it here? I moved last year from Mountain View to Raleigh. I know the area very well. The best school districts will be in Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos and Cupertino. Mountain View is also considered good because they share a high school with Los Altos. The top notch schools are in Palo Alto & Cupertino.

Affordable rents would be in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and Redwood City. You didn't mention what your budget is or how big of an apartment you need. Craigslist and realtor dot com can give you an idea of what to expect. It will be higher than in Cary. Will you company adjust your salary to account for the higher cost of living?

If I had to compare Silicon Valley with the Triangle, I might say that Palo Alto is similar to Chapel Hill, Mountain View is a bit like Durham, Cary could be compared to Cupertino, except Cupertino has a larger Asian population. San Jose might compare to Raleigh. You'll quickly see that the entire area has merged into one which is very different than the Triangle. Many of the towns have a unique downtown area. You get the advantage of being able to get to a lot of stores, restaurants and activities without having to go to far.
