Lived in Marina for a short time in the early 90s. Not a place where you want to be wandering around outside at night, like Salinas, or other nearby neighborhoods. Have not been around there since Ft. Ord closed though. Perhaps there has been some positive change. Then again, maybe it is worse.

Only took 3 1/2 years for OP to get a response here.

That's because nobody lives in Marina.

Heh, old post.

Well I've only been to Marina a handful of times, so take the following with some salt. I briefly dated a girl who was living there. My impression was that it was pretty secluded, and it seems to always be significantly colder than other areas. Even in the middle of summer it seemed like you have to wear a jacket. It always seemed to be gray and overcast. The ocean is nearby and there looked to be some interesting sand dunes that I think people go 4-wheeling on, maybe?

Resurrected threads are my faves.

I've passed through Marina and it is as described: secluded, little-populated, cool and grey. The main road seemed pretty dilapidated as did many of the buildings along it. It seems like a has-been city.

I understand that there are several places a person would work if they lived there- Ford Ord, CSU Monterey or in Monterey or Carmel, so it's not like it's a retirement/work at home-only community but it's too far from San Jose to be a suburb/exurb of SJ and I don't know if it can quite be called a mini metropolitan area.

That's just the thing. I'm not sure what to make of the place. All I know is that during the long, hot, sunny days of summer, a quick escape to Monterey and its surrounding area is a relief.

Default i lived there

I lived in marina for 5 years. I spent most of my time in pacific grove so that is where I ended up moving. Marina is a good town just needs some improvement. There is a great donit/bagel place and dishes restaurant is awesome. I just think the way the town is deisgned is the problem. No walkable downtown, doesn't take the nearby gorgeous coast and beaches to its advantage, etc. So like I said I spent my time in pg where the coast is very accessible via the coastal trail. Oh yah, coffee mia in marina is a great place to check out too.

Google Earth check shows a whole bunch of hotels in a town that's a blip on the map. Popular for the massive sand dunes. Looks like a nice diversion off 101 when you hit Salinas.
