Hello!

I am relocating to the area and just found out I will be assigned between two clinics, one in Livermore and one in Menlo Park. (And by working between, I mean two days at one and three days at the other.) I was just wondering where a good central location would be to rent an apartment so I am not commuting more than an hour each way. I am less drawn to more suburban areas and would like good nightlife, outdoor activities, culture, etc.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Tough one. It's going to be rough no matter what you do, because even if you come to the peninsula side, you'll have to deal with 880 traffic to get to 580. Probably the best compromise would be staying close to Hwy 92 on the peninsula side. Given that, San Mateo would be the best fit I can think of. That would be 25 minutes to Menlo Park and 50 minutes, mostly against traffic, to Livermore, with a $4 toll coming home.

Thanks! Would it make a difference if I told you I have to be AT work at 8:00 am and finish the day at 4:30 pm? How would it be to split the difference and live near downtown SJ if I'm leaving that early in the morning? Still suicide?! I thought so...
I appreciate your help!

If you live near downtown SJ, the commute to Menlo Park will be hell on wheels. That's why I suggested mid-peninsula.

Do you think it would be too far out of the way (and thus not worth it) to take 280 instead of the 101 to Menlo Park at that time?
I have been to the area Bay Area twice. Obviously I found an apartment of interest on The Alameda and have to move in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the advice!

The 280 commute is what I'm talking about. It's not uncommon for it to be stop and go all the way from Page Mill Road into San Jose.

That is what I feared....I can't wait! Hopefully, anything is tolerable for a year. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

If I am lucky enough (crossing my fingers) to end up at just one site, let's say Menlo Park...Any viable chance of commuting from San Francisco? Are you chuckling at the naive out-of-towner yet?

The drive to Menlo Park would be fine via 280. The problem would be crossing the Bay Bridge, which can be an ordeal (or smooth sailing) at any time of any day.

Commute notwithstanding, you've chosen well finding a place on The Alameda.

Leven the bristled nerves with an occasional walk down to Buck Shaw stadium on Saturdays to see the Earthquakes. Or just admire the better half of the fine students of SCU (don't gawk too hard, though). Las Palmas serves up superb cheapo crispy tacos with an excellent salsa bar, btw.
