Just looking for some general information about the different types of rentals available, and the monthly rates, in the Santa Fe area. Strange as it may sound, the smaller the apartment the better. I suppose that means a studio or efficiency, but it doesn't necessarily have to be in a typical apartment building or complex. Even something like a converted garage appeals to me. Not so much for low-income reasons, but simply because I'm a weirdo who prefers small living spaces. Something with unique character. Are there many such types of apartments in Santa Fe, and what would their general rental rates be?

Sounds like a good idea, santafescribe. I'll have a look there. I knew about Craigslist and probably should have thought of it before posting this thread, but it slipped my mind. So I'm glad you mentioned it. I've been through Santa Fe before and thought it was a beautiful area. There are a number of different areas around the country I'm researching for a possible move to, and Santa Fe has been on that list for many years. The art-oriented nature of the region appeals to me, and I'm wondering if it may be a peaceful, inspiring place to do some writing and photography. So I'd like to check it out. Thanks again!

Glad to have jogged your memory about Craigslist! The other option is my personal favorite rental site, AirBNB. Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb It tends to have more of those quirky, small living spaces you are looking for.

Default Thanks santafescribe -

I'm also looking for the same situation. and looking in the Santa Fe/Taos region.

more questions -

1) can you suggest a safe motel/hotel/or other that has reasonable rates when I visit. I'll be staying 1-2 weeks.

2) If I decide to move there - how can I be sure I'm renting in a safe place?

The Sage Inn is in a convenient location and probably can offer you a good rate. Closer to town you could try the Inn of the Governors - more expensive, but more convenient, and if you're off season they'll probably do a deal.

Hopefully your week or so in town will give you a good idea of a "safe place" to rent. As in the previous response, be sure to check Craigslist and the Santa Fe New Mexican for rentals while here, so you can get a good sense for what's available.
