Too many regulations and fees and pit rules and freaking out by environmentalists.

Many of the oil companies have left the state to go to more oil-friendly states.

Most of the production in New Mexico is in the four corners area of the state.
As long as there's money to be made, the oil companies aren't going anywhere.

Gas production is big in the Four Corners, but oil is produced mainly in Lea and Eddy Counties in the far southeastern part of the state (aka "Little Texas"). See this: 2009 production by County.

Take a look at the area around Eunice, NM using Google maps, satellite view. You might understand why environmentalists freak out: view of Eunice, NM

Residents of Santa Fe would not accept this happening to their landscape.

Lea, Eddy, Rio Arriba, San Juan and Chaves counties currently appear to be the largest drillers of Oil in New Mexico. Those are up in the Northeast corner or Southeast corner of New Mexico. Here is a county map: New Mexico County Map - NM Counties - Map of New Mexico

You might want to check out Williston, North Dakota. That's where the big oil boom is happening now, they have more jobs than people.

By the way, Santa Fe County's oil ordinances have been called the "toughest in the United States."

From Drilling Santa Fe:

"The county’s ordinance requires eight reports or assessments be done by companies that want to drill here:

A report that shows that what you’re planning to do is consistent with the county’s general plan.

An environmental impact report.

A fiscal impact report.

A report that shows county facilities are sufficient to service oil and gas projects.

Water availability assessment. In other words, how is the oil and gas drilling going to affect fresh water and subsurface water.

A report that shows how easily your drilling might cause an emergency.

Traffic report.

Geohydrologic report.

Bob Gallagher, president of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association, sees the county’s ordinance as a virtual ban on drilling."

I wonder how many reading this thread have ever been through that "bustling" community just up the road from Eunice - OIL CENTER, NM?
