I'm sure its good for the environment as bags won't be flying everywhere. My problem with this ordinance is what about those who don't have a lot of money to buy the reusable bags? Seriously my rent is more than what I make, and my bills are high too. My paychecks are pretty much gone by the time I get them, and no one hires for second jobs because they want people who are available all the time. I want to keep the job I currently have.
Reusable bags are not that cheap.
Another good thing is since I have no transportation and have to use the bus, at least I wont have to worry about the bags tearing apart, but I would have to buy less now.

We have been using reusable bags in the ABQ area for over a year. We got them from various stores. My wife said they were $1.00 each...
From Article: The Good, the Bag, and the Ugly - Plastic bag ban to take effect in February
"So far, the Environmental Services Division has purchased 10,000 reusable bags for distribution—primarily at fire stations and community centers, where lower-income shoppers can claim them—and it plans on ordering more soon, Mortimer says."
Was just going to post the same thing. I see them at all the grocery stores for $1 each. Also, was going to post the article but couldn't find it regarding the free bags.

My wife has a collection of reusable bags from various places... Her most designer friendly bag is from Albertson's (she says). She also has a reusable bag from Trader Joe's, which is designed for wine bottles...

We have one of those wine bottle ones also. I am the furthest person from what one would call a tree huger or a disciple of the Church of Al Gore. IMHO, the reusable bags just make more sense. They don't tear. We live in Old Town and walk to Lowe's Grocery, Golden Crown, The Farmer's Market several times a week and they are just much more durable for transporting goods while carrying them for any distance. If I were one that used public transit most often, especially to buy groceries or every day items I would rather have the reusable bags because of the above.
Sam's club doesn't give you bags and people think nothing about it. I load the groceries in bags when I get to the car. We'll adjust.
When in PA this summer I was surprised to have to pay a quarter to use a shopping cart! You got it back if you returned the cart. If you forgot to bring a quarter for the machine you really wouldn't buy much!

In France you insert 1Euro to get your cart at a parking lot station and when you return it you get your euro back. It's a great system and I'm glad to hear that at least some place in PA does the same. If you don't have the correct coin, you can go in to the store, get it, walk back to the cart station and get your cart. But hold it - that would mean you'd actually have to walk a bit more, and that kind of exercise just won't do!
As an aside, it's always amusing to me that people will drive around and around a parking lot to find a close-in parking space instead of parking further out and getting a good little walk in. But that's another subject…...

I thought it was a good idea too--just never heard about it before. I like the card idea better than the quarter.
I think it's really funny when I go to the gym and someone sits and waits until someone comes out of the gym to get the close spot. The only time I would do that is at night and I don't want to park way in the back for safety reasons.
I won't miss taking my plastics back to the stores to recycle.
Charging me for plastic bags would teach me to remember that I have cloth, including insulated, bags in the back of the Subie wagon. If the money went directly to the store this would catch on very quickly.

Here, close-in parking isn't really that much of a commodity, it is parking where there is some shade that is hard to come by. Trying to always think "green," I always try to remember to keep a couple of these shopping bags in the back of my Hummer.
