Thank you all so much for your advice. October would work for us, too. (That's one of the nice things about being retired -- we can come and go as we please!) We are so used to early snow/ice/rainstorms and seriously cold weather up where we live (eastern Washington), that we were gunshy about visiting NM in October. Given the altittude of Santa Fe, isn't that a concern for you?
No. The "first snow" in Santa Fe typically is, or was, an extremely light snowfall (that doesn't reach the ground) around October 10, which only manifests in the higher altitude of the north end of town. Then there's nothing until Nov., Dec., or sometimes, even January. Santa Fe hardly gets snow anymore. The weather patterns have changed significantly in the last years or so.

They must have migrated north. Our first real snow (and/or freezing rain; poor trick-or-treaters!) is often on Hallowe'en; our last around Easter. And for those five months, the sun is just a rumor. Nice summers, though. Our flowers are TOUGH!
October has fantastic weather, IMO. It'll be above freezing (just barely) at night and in the mornings but in the 50s during the day. That feels fantastic with our intense desert sun.
You might also consider Los Alamos as a day trip from Santa Fe. It's very different from the rest of NM but has some interesting Manhattan Project themed sights/museums.

Thanks, doc.
