As for the weapons for defense, just be aware that you're not supposed to be packing in a National Park. That said, I'll say that if I followed that law there would have been a night in Abiquiu that I guarantee wouldn't have ended in my favor. It's one of those laws that is meant to keep firearms completely out of an area, but only effectively restricts those that wouldn't prey on people anyway. I'd rather be around to live with a jury's decision than leave my family's fate in the hands of drunk punks.
Right on. When I was in NM, I went with a friend on a photography tour of the SW Colorado fall colors and the Utah NPs. Although those areas are pretty remote and therefore safe from most riff raff, I kept a loaded gun handy the entire time. I, too, prefer breaking the law and living over following it and dying.

I always "pack" in State parks or Nat Parks. I couldn't care less what some pansy bureaucrat thinks. Nobody will see my gun until they need to see it. And then they'll wish they hadn't.
If I have to pay a fine to save my life, I'm ok with that.

I think it may no longer be illegal to carry in the national parks or wildlife refuges. That said, I'm not a lawyer -- so this is not legal advice!
I always pack when I come to NM. I ride a motorcycle most of the time, and I feel vulnerable on long trips. Besides, I have a Concealed Handgun License in TX, and it's reciprocal with NM CHLs. In any case, no one will see it except as a last resort (unless I go the the NRA's Whittington Range near Raton).
The reason that the U.S. has such a large prison population is because we have several "groups" of people that commit a very large, disproportonite amount of crime...The other low-crime countries have a much more homoginous population...

Yep, because we have more guns available than any other country...makes you wonder...
Many of those who are incarcerated were using illegal substances. You can't blame that on guns.
