We are considering a move from Kansas City to Santa Fe. We have a 4 year old and 1 year old. Where do young families typically live? What's the downtown like? What is there to do with young children that you would recommend?

There's a childrens museum- never been there but sent some visiting family there and they had a good time. SF is not really a kids town (more a place for retired folks in my opinion). When kids hit school age most people seem to send them to private schools or leave town. Check the education stats on city data.

Families tend to cluster around the neighborhood school of their choice, and going by test scores the "best" public elementary schools are Eldorado, which now goes to 8th grade, and Wood Gormley, which goes to 6th. Of course your criteria may not be schools with high test scores, in which case your choice is broader. The Eldorado community is family friendly, with single family homes & large lots. It's about 20 minutes from downtown Santa Fe. There are many members on this board who post about Eldorado, so just do a search and you'll find all the opinions you need. Wood Gormley is downtown, in an area called South Capital. Homes here are more expensive than Eldorado, and the area is highly walkable - if you know about WalkScores, most streets around Wood Gormley have scores in the early 80% upwards. Wood Gormley itself is about 7 minutes walk from the downtown Plaza.
You have of course also the option of private schools - Rio Grande School & Waldorf come to mind.

Re things to do - I moved here with a 5 year old (now 12) and we've never been short of things to do, and pretty similar stuff to most towns, with of course the added huge benefit of closeness to fabulous outdoor activities. As SanfordR mentions, there is the Children's Museum, where me and my son have spent many hours! There are also community centers with excellent swimming pools, and private swimming & tennis clubs.

Hope that helps to start your thinking!

Throughout the summer there are tons of concerts and outdoor events on or near the Plaza (downtown) that are fantastic for little kids. There's a great farmers market with entertainers, a few decent parks -- I've been a little disappointed by the lack of parks on the east side but there are good ones sprinkled throughout the city. The childrens museum is fantastic for kids up to 6 or 7. There are a few mom's clubs that plan events throughout the year. And there's always the Aquarium, Zoo and Explora (science museum) an hour away in Albuquerque.

I would agree that this really isn't a kid town, but if you look you can find plenty of things to do with young children.

I have to agree with Cynathus. In the short time I've been here I've noticed its not really a kid town OR a "20-30 something" town either.
