i found out about the "legacy bike trail" recently. it's a 10 mile long bike trail that goes all the way from sarasota to venice with 6 or so trailheads. i googled it and found a site withe a map of the trail and the locations of the trailheads. seems that a lot of destinations for our family (library, grocery, etc.) are close to the trailheads.

There are also trails along the canal in Venice. If you park at the train station, you can pick up the trail right there.

Thanks for that link, SoFLGal. We plan to either bring our bikes down to Florida when we spend our winters there, or buy new ones - you know, north and south bikes. I have my eye on a sassy pink leisure bike! The link not only gives good biking areas, but also other interesting places to explore in the area.
