Single mom with a 9 yr old looking to move to Florida from Rockford IL in about a year. Have been to Orlando , Sarasota, Siesta Key, Tampa area...Just not sure the best place to go. Will be renting and apt or condo for first year or so to get the feel and make sure this move is right for us. I realllly liked Sarasota when we were there this past July. Can anyone tell me where the safest-lowest crime apt's areas be? Rental between 800-950 month. My son will be attending a public school also so need to be near a good school zone area. If there are any towns near Sarasota that you can suggest..
We currently live in Rockford Il and the crime here has risen drastically. I know no area or city is perfect and crime is everywhere. Just need some advice on areas to stay away from. Thanks!!

Hey Gabs!
Welcome to the board!
I think you are really going to enjoy Sarasota.
And, I think you hit the jack pot finding your way here. There are tons of helpful posters that will help you out with just about any information you may need. I'm a little south of Sarasota, and don't know as much as some of the other great people here, but I love it!

The one thing that everyone will warn you about is that the job market here is not very good. In fact it is really tough - but if you apply yourself you can find something, so don't let all the negative talk beat you down too much. BUT, figure out something ahead of time - if you can.

Sarasota county has good school systems. In my exceptional opinion , they have better school systems than most of the counties in Florida.

Tell us more about what you enjoy, out door activities, beach going, biking, kayaking, walking, golfing, flirting - , or ignoring guys that flirt - .

Anyway - welcome, we obviously like to have a little fun here, while we try to help.

My wife and I live in North Port. Love it. Much of the city is new, including the schools. North Port was one of those Florida boom towns that more than doubled in size between 2002 and 2006, before the nationwide housing boom collapsed. So home rentals are plentiful and reasonable. It is about 20 miles from the Englewood/Venice beaches, close to Port Charlotte. North Port is about to open a beautiful new youth center near the middle school, across from the high school. Our residents have the youngest average age in Sarasota County -- a county long known for attracting snowbirds and senior citizens.

You might consider North Port.

Northporter has said pretty much what I would have said. I too would recommend you look into North Port. You can get a pretty decent place for that rent and you have the benefit of the Sarasota county schools.

Good Luck in Sarasota FL. I got a Friend who;s a Judge down there. Also the Crime in Rockford has been out control now for sometime. I left almost 10years ago myself. Sarasota was nice when I went to visit their last year.

Thanks for all your input. I will look at Sarasota and the North Port area. We basically want to be near decent Middle and High Schools and near but not on beach due to expense etc... Our school system has shot down hill in the past 2 years , possibly longer. Housing is reasonable here but that is really all I can sadly say about it. When I originally thought about moving to Florida , I considered Orlando, but once I had been to Sarasota, Siesta Key area I fell in love. I wanted to get some idea of the areas that are a definite "stay away from". Are there some nice apartment complexes in North Port or Sarasota that are reasonable and safe?

Apartment complexes might not be your best solution. If I were you, I'd try to find someone renting out their condo or townhouse as a better option OR rent a home. We seem to have a glut of rentals in Sarasota at the moment and you can find a single family home in a decent rated school district for about $900 to $1000 a month.

Be very wary of too good to be true offers on craigslist. There was a recent article in the local paper about how scammers are getting the addresses of homes in foreclosure and, if they are vacant, changing the locks and renting out the properties to unsuspecting people.

I have family up in the Moline-Rockford area and can appreciate you wanting to relocate. The Sarasota area has a lot to offer, especially for families.

Any info you need on schools here can be found on the school district's web site: Sarasota County Schools, Home

Good luck with your move.
