what is 'typical english' ? the top takeouts here are indian and chinese then maybe fish and chips.

maybe roast beef and yorkshires, steak and kidney pie or puddding, sheps pie , for me the ultimate is a full English brekkie - sausage bacon, fried slice, beans, mushrooms, snotty egg, possibly chips and maybe -just for Barry - black pudding............

Fried tomato with the breakfast.

English people are very cosmopolitan when it comes to eating, but also faddish.

In the 60's and 70's Italian restaurants were in vogue
80's and 90's Chinese
90's onwards Indian
Now Thai

Traditional food would always include

Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding
Bangers and Mash
Fried Fish and Chips
Shepherds/Cottage Pie
Steak and Kidney/Oyster Pie
Toad in the hole
Pork pie
Ploughman's lunch
Mince pies
Christmas pudding
Trifle
Spotted Dick

and so on..........

Also it's difficult, if not impossible, to find a good Chinese or Indian restaurant. I guess there is a list of ethnic cuisine which is missing from Florida but it's a small state and there is no shortage of eating opportunities.

You can produce good grilled food and BBQs with a cook but you need a Chef for fine cuisine and I would think there may be a shortage of these in Florida.
I agree there isn't a single good Chinese restaurant in the area, but I love Indian, and have found both Gateway To India and Tandoor to be perfectly acceptable. In fact, we ate at Tandoor last night, and I can assure you, it's better than "good." The lamb vindaloo (for me, the dish by which an Indian restaurant is best judged) was excellent. The lamb was tender and not overcooked (the typical offense), and the sauce was spicy yet complex. The ragda patties were great, and the tikka masala was very good. We finished with the pista kulfi, which was nicely rich in cardamom flavor. Last time we were in, we had some korma and the channa masala, which were also very good. The naan was just right, too (although we both preferred the garlic to the raisins-and-nuts variety).

But I must admit that sadly, you are correct about Chinese. It's just sad that there isn't a single high-end Chinese place within driving distance, and that what does exist has no standout gems.

Looked at Tandoor and Gateway to India websites and was not encouraged.

They both open lunchtimes as buffets and I have an inbuilt defence system which steers me away from all buffet restaurants.

Tandoor show prices which area little off putting. Quite a bit higher than UK prices.

They both look as though they promote mild curries almost as if they fear frightening off the clients with hot and spicy.

Interesting that, in common with most Uk restaurants, they offer chicken tikka masala which I understand to be a western invention.

I have lived all over the country, and have had the great and the good, the bad and the abysmal of pretty much all cuisines.

I am also very leery of any place that has a buffet, and for good reason, I think. That said, I never order a buffet anyway, so, well, there you have it. Also, I have definitely been to places (most notably Indian in DC, and Chinese in the NYC area) that have had buffets and where ordering off the menu has proven to be an excellent experience.

In any event, the two places I mention aren't GREAT, but they are certainly passable, and they are operated by people native to India (I have spoken to the owners at each). One cannot become so bogged down in one's Epicurian insistences (I just made that up) that one goes so far as to forsake the merely very good for the constant pursuit of sublimely incredible.

OK, I have said to much (for this forum, at least).

But your option while living here is to never have Indian food again, or to have some decent Indian food from time to time.

think you will find most 'indian' dishes are western orientated. Typical Indian cuisine differs somewhat.

also the great majority of Indian restaurants are owned/run by Bangladeshis.

oddly enough we never get cravings for curry when in Fla

Mattison's 41 (http://www.mattisons.com/mattisons_41.cfm - broken link)does them pretty well, but pricey.

Otherwise, I think you're stuck at Pincher's, which is passable.

Oh wait, there is one place on St. Armand's that does a really nice seafood tower, and the crab legs were really good.

Drawing a blank, sorry.

We're from Baltimore, so when it comes to crabs of any kind, we're a little jaded. Between the blue crabs and the Deadliest Catch insano-crab dinner at the Oceanaire, we got plenty spoiled.
