I am moving to Sarasota in Jan 2011 and can't wait! Can someone help me find a rental for myself and a standard poodle? Thanks.

I doubt you'll have too much trouble, but of course, the first question everyone will want to know is whether or not you are committed to downtown, or if you're open.

If it were me, single, looking to rent, knowing what I know now, I would be looking to rent in Southside Village or one of the keys. Every time we drive down Casey Key, I make a mental not to become wealthy as soon as possible so I can buy us a beachfront house down there.

Meanwhile, I am happy to hear you do not have a sub-standard poodle. That would have been a real shame.

Your standard poodle will be a problem with a lot of downtown condos.

Most of the condos downtown restrict pet ownership to dogs who are <25 lbs. (which, of course, is completely ass-backwards - I have a greyhound that has never once barked or made "a scene" in 10 years - of course, he'd be prohibited from most downtown condos, due to his size - 75 lbs. OTOH, a pekinese, dachsund, and/or basset hound who barked nonstop 12 hours a day would be perfectly kosher in most downtown condos - strange but true.

If you have a pet that is >30 lbs. and you're looking to rent downtown, your best bet (and where you'll get the most bang for your buck) is to rent a house in the Laurel Park/Burns Court area (which is just south of downtown).

I live in this neighborhood and I can tell you that the good places are not advertised online or in print - you have to take an afternoon and go driving through the neighborhood looking for "House For Rent" signs.

Good luck.
