Well, let's say this: I had a freind whose last name was Sherman, and when he traveled to the South on business, he used his mother's maiden name.......

Names are funny...Growing up I inherited a 10 letter virtually unpronouncible consonant heavy Slavic surname. Over the years I heard my parents spell and pronounce it to others when conducting everyday business and still it was mangled and mispronounced. I grew to hate it. It was like a burden. I then married a man with a "generic" (common) 6 letter surname and it was such a relief. After 10 years I divorced but elected to keep my married name. A few years later I married an Italian man, again with a 10 letter vowel heavy name. Same deal. Constant repeating, constant mispronunciation, constant spelling. I elected to keep my generic name from my first marriage. I love my husband but I just chose not to deal with the name issue (again). I love my heritage but I will not devote X amount of time of my life spelling and pronouncing and repronouncing it for clarification. Insofar as employment is concerned I believe some trades may be traditionally ethnically oriented, however networking and the truism of "it's not what you know but who you know" seems to be universally applicable across the board.

My married name is longer, often misspelled AND mispronounced, but my maiden name was also the name of a cartoon character. I'd rather correct people's spelling and pronunciation than have ONE more person laugh and say "HA HA HA! Elmer Fudd!!!" like they're the first person to say that.
