My husband is relocating for a job in Bradenton from IN, he may be there by himself working for a while, but eventually we (the rest of the fam.) will be joining him and looking for a good neighborhood and schools - safe with the best middle school and highschool for the kids. Any suggestions? Someone once mentioned Pametto?
Also, we were thinking of possibly buying or renting a villa temporarily until we get to know the area. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Communities like Lakewood Ranch, Greyhawk Landing, Millcreek, Braden Woods, River Club, Tara, etc., would be good places to look below the river. Palmetto and Ellenton are north of the river but some areas are better than others.

Stay clear of Palmetto. Bradenton and Sarasota near the highway or near the water. As bbronston mentioned all good neighborhoods.

Does anyone have any zip codes to go with those better areas mentioned?

I can vouge for this.

Not only is crime a concern, I fear that kids growing up anywhere north of the river will not have a very cultured experience and will complain even more and be even more bored to tears. You ain't seen an uncultured hell till you been there imho.
