My husband and I are looking into installing hurricane windows in our home in North Port. Being that we haven't made the move down in completely, we have to go with the windows as opposed to shutters. Could someone recommend a good company (installers) and good windows. Also, has anyone heard of PGT WinGuard Windows. Just had an estimate and those are the windows they would be installing. Are they any good? All the help will be greatly appeciated.

we have PGT on our home.make sure they are installed correctly -we have a couple that are misaligned slightly and a real pain to open/close.

also sliders here (the US) are in my opininion pretty poor and the security is bad (you can lift one out real easy). ask about extra security or go french doors

PGT is a local window & door manufacturing company (located in Venice). Many companies use them. I just put in 18ft of PGT sliders, but didn't go with the hurricane resistence since it was almost 3x the price. Just curious, why can't you go with shutters? Just take them down when you arrive, and put them up when you leave. Most types of shutters are not hard to put up. Accordians and roll-downs are the simplest (but also the most costly).
Either way you go, I'm sure you will be happy with the PGT products. You see them all over the place down here. So far, we are happy with ours.

The PGT sliders we just put in have a patented rail lock system on the bottom that prevent them from being lifted off the track . Yours should have them too. If not, call PGT and ask them to send you a pack. They are easy to install. You can also get a mortise lock put on the door for added security.

Try Clear Choice Windows and More, 941-378-9700, ask for Billy Leblanc. We had 20 windows/doors installed, cut A/C bill by 50% or more! Best customer service we ever had from ANY company!

Thanks for all your advice. The reason we wanted to go with windows instead of shutters is simply cause the windows are very, very old, and need replacing. So I thought, kill 2 birds with 1 stone and replace the windows and get hurricane protection all at the same time. Since my DH and I bought a fixer, there is never a time we come down here and DON'T have hundreds of things to do. So I figured 1 less thing to do, taking the shutters on and off every trip, would be a plus. And I will definitely give Clear Choice a call. Thanks.

PGT windows are nice and it's a great way to "support local"! Just make sure whoever installs them for you pulls a permit. Installation is expensive, but best left to the pros.

I have been considering upgrading my old windows, too. Since i live on the water and get a lot of reflection from the sun, I am considering hi-tech energy efficient windows and getting permanent type hurricane shutters that will add protection as well as additional energy savings. I saw a product called Moderator cut: Per The Terms of Service: "Recommendations are allowed for posters that have at least 10 posts. One cannot recommend himself/herself." No soliciting. and have never seen anything like them. Does anyone have these installed?
Thanks

I would love to know which windows you were asking about. Shame knowledge is censured.
