Hi,
We may be relocating to the Bradenton/Sarasota area in June from Michigan. We are a professional couple in our forties, I'm a pediatric nurse practitioner and my wife is a HR director. We have two kids, 13yo boy (freshman in August) and 8yo girl (3rd grader in August).

We're just wondering if anyone can steer us to some good neighborhoods/schools for the kids. Our number one priority is education and schools. My son will play high school football and that is his priority. Both kids currently attend Catholic Schools in Michigan and we would either continue in that tradition (as they didn't have good public school experiences) or in the private school area. Can you please help us with schools meeting that criteria (preferably with good football opportunities).

Thanks,

I would recommend Sarasota & Cardinal Mooney.

I am biased because I live here and because my daughter did well at Mooney but I'd suggest looking at Lakewood Ranch, too, and second the Mooney suggestion. There's a hospital inside Lakewood Ranch and the others (Sarasota Memorial, Doctor's, Blake) are within an easy commute. There seems to be a resurgence of companies coming here, too, so there may be HR opportunities. If not, the same commute possibilities exist. In fact, you could also extend upwards to St. Pete, Brandon, Clearwater, even Tampa if you don't mind the drive.

HR opportunities in this area are slim and you will probably find that the pay does not meet your expectations. I was a HR Specialist/ Benefits Specialist for many years in the Sarasota area, until the (nationally known) manufacturing company I worked for moved the operation overseas. I then switched careers due to the lack of HR opportunities in the immediate area. A couple of my former co-workers had to relocate to Tampa to find comparable HR jobs. The job openings in HR have shrunk since then due to corporations downsizing or moving and the economy. Sarasota's a great place to live, but you may have to think outside of the box to find a position you would find acceptable here. You may end up commuting to Tampa or St. Pete for work.

Ok, now we're looking at public schools in the area. Most likely Manatee HS. Any thoughts to this school and housing around it?

The link to the Manatee school web site is: School District of Manatee County Florida

The site should be able to answer all of your questions regarding the high school, test scores, classes, etc.

As to neighborhoods, what are your priorities for a neighborhood (ie deed restricted or not, older or newer homes, living sq ft, number of bedrooms needed, etc.) and what price range were you thinking? I'd rather give you a short list that is better suited to your needs than post every neighborhood in Bradenton here.

The shade just grows each year; remember no local is without it's crime as crime does not know the location, location, location factor.
