I am so happy to see that we've all jumped on the OP with our honest thoughts... but I will add my two cents! It's true that the Trib has something against North Port... they deny it, but I don't know how they can. And YES, North Port has a YMCA... and YES North Port has a free-standing emergency clinic on line to open 2009... with intentions to build a hospital eventually.

North Port is indeed (as others have mentioned) a fairly young city and community... it is moving through its akward teenage years and will emerge an even more fantastic place than it is today.

Couldn't agree more. They are doing a great job repaving the roads here! Mine was done over a year ago now, and most in the Cranberry area nice and smooth. The schools are nice, my neighbors are nice... I still have the privacy of woods and trees around my home... there is a Publix close by no matter where you live... the new shops near Wal-Mart have and are going to really add to the area shopping, and the new construction and businesses on Toledo Blade are going to be NICE to have close by!
And whats up with all the whining about North Port moving the post office... is it all old people that live in the mobile home parks?? Where it is now is CENTRALLY located to service ALL the residents of North Port. How about Sumter's new section.. IT'S GORGEOUS (now if they can only get the crosswalks level with the pavement it would be great!) LOL

The HT has a big problem with North Port, but could it be because no one reads the HT here... we have the North Port Sun magrag, which actually has information pertaining to North Port instead of the occasional blurb about how much North Port stinks. Like I'm interested in what happens in Lakewood Ranch and Manatee County.. yawn.

Maybe one of the reporters would do good to get off of their swivel chair and take a drive down here too look around and interact with the residents.

Don't listen to the Herald. North Port is growing and fast. There are new stores of all sorts going up. Now is the time to get in as the prices of rentals and sales are low!

"Northport" doesn't have a hospital?

Hahaha, that's too funny. There's so many hospitals in the area I guess we can complain when one isn't a block away.

Problem with well water? If properly filtered its a LOT better for you than city water. City water EVERYWHERE is treated with flourides and chlorine. Chlorine is a major contributor to plaque build up in the heart and vascular system which leads to heart attacks and strokes. All care of your local government.

Doesn't have a YMCA? LOL

Wow. That's funny that we don't have a YMCA, I could've sworn that I've been going to it for a few months now.......I guess I've lost my mind, because clearly, North Port doesn't have one. I must have been mistaken.

Default I have to agree w/ the Hearld....

I've lived here for over 7 years

Have 2 small Children who have attended the public school system, my kids are honor roll, but fell way behind in the supposedly "A" rated school they attended...what a bad JOKE. They were bullied, my sons hair was set on fire by another classmate, this same FOURTH GRADER also threw a lit cigg into the trash in the class/told everyone he'd burn the school down..... and has been trouble that the school just shuffles around.
We finally called the police @ the teachers (secret-she was afraid of retaliation) insistence. Nothing was done. I had to pull both my kids out of the PS system for fear of saftey.
they take Ju-jitsu and know self defense, but my Lord, that is insane to think of the year we spent trying to get the superintendent (Gary Norris @ the time) to notice our situation. He never did.

And that is just the tip of the iceburg.......there are no sidewalks,(oh-Sumter has them wow-what about the rest of us taxpayers???) no safe bus stops for children, and where in the he** are the street lights (oh, yes, we have to get a "comittie, and find a way to pay for those) and Parks for kids? oh , please, don't tell me Dallas White! The skate park is full of trouble- JOKE! yes, the Y is here, but that is a joke as well. We are not made of money......I live 2 blocks from where Coral Rose was murdered......the sickos in my area alone are enough to make you want to vomit.

You (Real estate professionals) can quote all the stats you want, I live in reality, and the reality is, this place is somewhere as a former agent, that I would NEVER tell anyone w/ kids to move to. No jobs, employers here think $7-8 is good pay! LOL
Don't even get me started on the H20 situation. The well water here is the worst I've ever seen. we payed several thousand to have a "whole home Reverse Osmosis" system installed, and the maintenence on it is way more than we would spend on a water bill-the city is just lazy and refuses to keep up w/ the times, that is why they keep building new homes on sewer and well-full well knowing how terrible (PPM) the inclusion of contaminants is in the well system. YUCK!

Can't get out of here fast enough. I don't have 10 years to "wait" while NP goes thru a very ugly puberty! ONE Wal-mart??? come ya'll wake up!
my advice, don't move here! yes, the housing prices are low, but there are no jobs and w/ gas so high-you'd have to drive more than 50 miles to work, plus daycare? NO way! Go to St. Pete or North Tampa.
you all enjoy this depressing place-we are out asap!

OK, here we go again! Good thing Gary Norris, the superintendent of Sarasota county schools is gone. He was the worst thing to happen to the school system in years. The new superintendent is wonderful (and a Pine View graduate).

If you have been to North Port lately you'll see that there are sidewalks and street lights going in everywhere as well as many roads being widened.

To answer your question hdzup about zip code, if she lived a few block from where Coral Rose lived she lives in the 34286 zip code. That's a few streets from where I live and one of the most popular neighborhoods in North Port. I'm not too sure what you mean about no safe bus stops?? I wait with my kids at the bus stop every morning. I'm just not comfortable leaving the stand there in the morning. It's part of being a responsible parent.

As long as you have a reverse osmosis system the water is fine. We drink ours.

Who needs more than one Wal-Mart? It's not more than five minutes from anywhere in North Port. I personally, don't want/need more than one. Why would you? With a Wal-Mart on every corner it makes a city look trashy.

Tampa/St Pete is a much bigger city than North Port and my guess is that you'll find many more "sickos" there, just due to the increased population.

My advice for anyone looking to move to a new area (if you are not familiar with it) is to come check it out, maybe rent for a while and see how you like it. If you like it, great. If not you can move on.

it is funny to read about the roads and only one walmart..here in my town, the roads are horrible due to frost heaves. huge potholes. and my road washes out on the sides everytime it rains to much.. i live on a huge hill. as far as stores. we have delt with the dirtyest stores with rusty rickety carts for ever. a new store just opened in the next town over. the one nice one we have in the next town, has been here a little while but it is so crowded you cant stand it. and walmart is a mob scene here because theres only one in.... the next town. lol. we are just getting stuff here like target and circut city. in the next town though. my town, a tractor supply , peebles, i think peebles is doomed from lack of business. and a remodled groccerie store. everything else is package stores and pizza places.. a few rinky dink things come and go. we have a cvs and riteaid too. but still we travel to get anything we need. im sure i wont think northport is so bad. im used to traveling to another town, acutally, i prefer that sometimes. not now with gas prices but i used to do that more due to the fact that i work in a public job and knew everyone i saw out... couldnt get anything done. the grass may not always be greener but for me, i dont think it can get worse. summer seems like its almost over here. we are already thinking about the winter.. preparing for the huge oil cost. we are trying to do as much as we can for our kids to enjoy the summer. it will be gone and then we will be trapped inside for another 7 mos....
