I have lived here since I was in the 8th grade and remember when we only had 1, well maybe 2 stop lights... lol... only 1 Publix, and Winn Dixie... I have moved away and back several times, this has always been home. I have seen this city grow in leaps and bounds and I am proud this is my home, yes we have some issues (pot holed roads - my mom's is one of the worst) - too many crazy ordinances, but every city has to make mistakes, and learn from them - EVERY city has it's problems I have lived all over the U.S. and I have seen some bad places, and North Port is definately not one of them. I only wish that they would realize that we really do need a second High School though...and to chicagotampagirl, there aren't a whole lot of jobs anywhere.... get with the times....boo hoo.. you have to commute for a job (most big cities are full of commuters..)I drive 30 min to SRQ big deal.I have a great job. The school situation can happen anywhere...at least our kids aren't carrying guns (such as inner city schools) so you see I find it funny you are complaining about NP having one Wal Mart, we used to have to drive to Port Charlotte to go to that one.and a mall? hmm... used to have to go all the way to SRQ to hang at the mall..North Port is growing (FAST) the jobs are coming back, this is a great place to live if you have been here long enough to appreciate all the changes.
okay- you live in Lala land, I'll live @ my private zip

If you have been to North Port lately you'll see that there are sidewalks and street lights going in everywhere as well as many roads being widened.
To answer your question hdzup about zip code, if she lived a few block from where Coral Rose lived she lives in the 34286 zip code. That's a few streets from where I live and one of the most popular neighborhoods in North Port. I'm not too sure what you mean about no safe bus stops?? I wait with my kids at the bus stop every morning. I'm just not comfortable leaving the stand there in the morning. It's part of being a responsible parent.
As long as you have a reverse osmosis system the water is fine. We drink ours.
Who needs more than one Wal-Mart? It's not more than five minutes from anywhere in North Port. I personally, don't want/need more than one. Why would you? With a Wal-Mart on every corner it makes a city look trashy.
Tampa/St Pete is a much bigger city than North Port and my guess is that you'll find many more "sickos" there, just due to the increased population.
My advice for anyone looking to move to a new area (if you are not familiar with it) is to come check it out, maybe rent for a while and see how you like it. If you like it, great. If not you can move on.
Okay! we obviously will have to agree to disagree on everything.....
SoFlgal -I'll try not to take that as a personal dig, the part abut being a responsible parent, and not leaving small children @ bus stops....my sons both started school here, and we have always had huge issues w/ the lack of safe bus stops-I've taken it up w/ the transportation department on many occasions-why not have a bus stop somewhere other than some irate home-owners front/side yard, why on a busy street, only a few ft. away from speeding cars? (lets not even mention the teenagers in the woods and the times I've had to call the police on them)
BTW: my kids do not ride the bus, have not in years, since I'm such a responsible parent-I decided they would b better of driven by a responsible Mom who cares enough to get them off that nasty bus!
If you live in the same area, I have no idea how you could be blind to this situation-last year, a small girl was HIT by a senior who wanted to go around the stopped bus..... and how did you get street lights in your neighbor hood (apparently you live close to me) there are none in mine-as I stated, yes, Sumter Blvd has them, but what about the rest of us taxpayers?
where are the sidewalks?...did I miss them on my drive home today???? oh, yes the new ones on Sumter.....blah. We need more of everything - my tax dollars are not being well spent! oh, the police have a new shiny admin building......and Sumter has a pretty new Island and old fashioned lights -how nice. what about the rest of us?
those sidewalks do me no good if they are not in my area!
Oh-and trash/trashy people makes a neighbor hood trashy, not a wally world. We need the revenue to grow.....we need more commercial industry here. NP needs to stop running every business person away! NP had plenty of "trash" long before Wal mart came to town!
As far as this particular area being one of the more "popular"....ya lost me there-it is like a ghost town-not normal-never will be until they find the killers of that poor lil girl. Everyone I know who lives around me feels the same way...it is strange, my kids are not allowed to even play outside (street) for fear of what may happen. we are only being realistic. I will never feel safe here. w/ good reason.
The water is not fine-it is terrible and you need to stop saying otherwise...it is very misleading to innocent people who have no idea what it is like here!
As you say, let them come and find out for them selves...but don't out-right lie about how wonderful North port is, your License is showing......I'll be happy to show my bill from my(monthly maint.) h20 company-this is the last home I will ever have septic and sewer in -it blows. Esp. in Florida-the salt water makes it way worse here. that is straight from the Guys at ECO.....

Reason: typos

Hate to bum ya out-I work from home.....no commute involved, but as a taxpaying citizen, I expect more. you should too. I'm from Chicago, and became hardened to crime, that is why we chose NP-it wasn't a big city!!!! but if ya wanna run w/ the big dogs (meaning increasing taxes, pushing growth and construction and the like) you have to keep up w/ the growth, not stunt it or dole it out as you see fit....what jobs? where? honestly, where? Burger King? who can feed a family on that?
I use to date a guy who lives in North Port back in 2001 and I saw North Port growing and look at it now. They have a BIGGER city than Sarasota. Yes, it's true. Bigger than Sarasota. That of course is city limits but all in all, it isn't at all the one store, 2 traffic light little blink while you're headed to Port Charlotte and you're through it city it use to be.
This person likes this, that one likes that.
People, come on already.
Differences is what makes this world go around.
Thank God we aren't all alike. I may have to get a gun if I was like most of you.
Have 2 small Children who have attended the public school system, my kids are honor roll, but fell way behind in the supposedly "A" rated school they attended...what a bad JOKE. They were bullied, my sons hair was set on fire by another classmate, this same FOURTH GRADER also threw a lit cigg into the trash in the class/told everyone he'd burn the school down..... and has been trouble that the school just shuffles around.
We finally called the police @ the teachers (secret-she was afraid of retaliation) insistence. Nothing was done. I had to pull both my kids out of the PS system for fear of saftey.
they take Ju-jitsu and know self defense, but my Lord, that is insane to think of the year we spent trying to get the superintendent (Gary Norris @ the time) to notice our situation. He never did.
And that is just the tip of the iceburg.......there are no sidewalks,(oh-Sumter has them wow-what about the rest of us taxpayers???) no safe bus stops for children, and where in the he** are the street lights (oh, yes, we have to get a "comittie, and find a way to pay for those) and Parks for kids? oh , please, don't tell me Dallas White! The skate park is full of trouble- JOKE! yes, the Y is here, but that is a joke as well. We are not made of money......I live 2 blocks from where Coral Rose was murdered......the sickos in my area alone are enough to make you want to vomit.
You (Real estate professionals) can quote all the stats you want, I live in reality, and the reality is, this place is somewhere as a former agent, that I would NEVER tell anyone w/ kids to move to. No jobs, employers here think $7-8 is good pay! LOL
Don't even get me started on the H20 situation. The well water here is the worst I've ever seen. we payed several thousand to have a "whole home Reverse Osmosis" system installed, and the maintenence on it is way more than we would spend on a water bill-the city is just lazy and refuses to keep up w/ the times, that is why they keep building new homes on sewer and well-full well knowing how terrible (PPM) the inclusion of contaminants is in the well system. YUCK!
Can't get out of here fast enough. I don't have 10 years to "wait" while NP goes thru a very ugly puberty! ONE Wal-mart??? come ya'll wake up!
my advice, don't move here! yes, the housing prices are low, but there are no jobs and w/ gas so high-you'd have to drive more than 50 miles to work, plus daycare? NO way! Go to St. Pete or North Tampa.
you all enjoy this depressing place-we are out asap!
Sorry you seem to only see the negative..try moving to St Pete and Tampa and living with the gangs, and the sexual predators they have and make sure you have your eyes wide open so you don't miss the drive by shootings going on. Then maybe you will realize that our one murder in your neighborhood could happen anywhere. btw...I also live in the area where Coral Rose was murdered.
Hello angelnfl!
if you read my earlier posts in this thread - you'd see that I stated that I am from Chicago-where drive by's and murders are rampant. I've also lived in St. Pete for 8 years . as bad as crime may be in those areas, they know how to run a city. I am not "choosing to only see negative" as you wrongly stated, I am stating the reality of the situation. how can me sharing my personal experiences, esp. about my children, be seen as "negative"? it happened and it was terrible!
We are small biz owners, and this city has made it impossible for us to move ahead and profit w/o jumping thru hoop after hoop. The tax increase(mil) the city council passed over the last few years has killed the residential construction in NP- it is not the the economy as most people think-NP city shot itself in the foot by making it impossible for small biz owners to survive in this climate. Most of our friends who owned small Biz are now filing for bankruptcy, losing homes and pretty much everything...it makes me angry to see so much potential being thrown away because of politics. now my family is beginning to suffer and i have the right to be upset and tell people the reality of the situation.
Honestly-Who cares if this city used to have 2 stop lights and now has 10??? where are the jobs and the incentives and tax breaks and small biz loans to bring more jobs here???? I'd love to stay, but can't if I cannot feed my family-we need this city to grow up and become the "big city" it is lamely attempting to be. as glad as I am that that @#*!## monster was arrested for murdering Coral Rose, it will never change the fact that it happened in my back yard. we were there when her body was found. Of course crime happens..we are not immune to it-we just did not expect this to happen here.
Oh, and "lilaclady...... stop lights, a few sidewalks and 1 AppleBees to eat in does not fit my idea of a City "bigger than Sarasota" what???-and the part about the gun, well, that is just scary! Sarasota has bazillions of restaurants, jobs, beaches, malls, stores, nail and hair salons.....north port has like 5? Thank GOD we are all different, but that comparision was just wild.
BTW:there has been more than one murder, did you forget about Denise Amber Lee, the 21 yo girl kidnapped and raped and murdered 2 miles from where we live? all I can say is thank God for the 2nd ammendment, and thank God for my big , protective dog.
I wish you all well.
