Future Publix Supermarket site (Sarasota: new home, luxury, construction)

For more than 2 years now there has been a sign on hwy 41 just North of River Rd indicating the future site of a Publix supermarket. Does anyone know when the building will commence, or is this something that just isn't going to happen?

I can't speak to that location but I recall reading an article where Publix said they were going to hold off on their plans for new construction (at that time) and, instead, put some money into updating some of their current stores. I think it was really just another example of the bad economy impacting plans that were in place before the meltdown.

They were building the Publix for the luxury planned communities that were springing up in the area, one of them being Sarasota National. Since the houses didn't sell, neither did Publix's idea to continue pooring money into building a new store.

They are building a new Publix right on 41 just north of Bahia Vista and will be closing the one by LTM downtown.

Maybe it may still come to pass. Per the newspaper there were a number of building permits pullled by Divosta the last two months. They are building the Island Walk community which is just put the road form the "future" Publix site.

Reviving an old thread....is the ongoing construction on 41 just south of Gran Paradiso going to be the new Publix site? Since all the new home development in the area has revived, I was thinking maybe the store construction is back on track.
