I realize that it is a "Yankee" holiday, but my wife and I will be coming to the area Memorial weekend and would like to know if there are any special events/happenings we should consider attending? Danke!

What type of events are you looking for?
Most of the towns celebrate with a Memorial Day parade. Lakewood Ranch will host one at their main street on Sunday at noon. Sarasota will host a parade downtown on Main street on Monday 5/30, starting at 10:00 am. There's also a concert at the Phillippi Estate Park at 5:00 pm on Memorial Day - if you're going, they suggest you bring lawn chairs.
If you're looking for more of a party, there's a big BBQ bash at Vinoy Park in downtown St. Pete on Saturday starting at 11:00 am. There will be bands and music.
A couple of local bars will be hosting big weekend parties, but if you're looking for more of that type of celebrating, you might try the St. Pete beach area for more parties.
Have fun, but please don't drink and drive.

Boat party in Placida all weekend, just east of the toll bridge to Gasparilla Island. Hundreds of boats anchored on/around a small island and bands playing on a barge.
