We finally made it here from the cold north and our family is now moved into the Greyhawk subdivision and so far I love it. A couple things I hadn't expected..
1. My cell phones dont work inside the house, the calls just get dropped. We have Verizon cell service, is there something I should know about this? My husband's Sprint service works fine.
2. Not a big deal... but my spouse has been approached 3 times (in Bradenton) but the better areas, and together as a family we've been approached once, in a parking lot of what seemed to be an ok area each time, by someone just randomly asking for any spare cash. These people look fine, not they type you would even expect would be asking.
3. I have 2 little shih-chons, they got into some weedy grass and were covered with "hitchhikers" does anyone know the correct term for these sticky seeds?
4. Is it usually this humid in August? I'm getting used to it but..I'm looking forward to Sept.
5. I wish I didnt have to take a busy highway to get everyplace...are there any plans to build alternate roads?
6. In my last community "everyone waved and smiled as you drove by.. its not quite like that in my new one but thats ok... I can live with it. I just really like the beauty of the place, and eventually I'll get out and meet more people. I love the trails, and all of the tropical plants and animals!

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining here, just listing the "unexpected". I want to add some tropical decor to my house, does anyone know good places to look for the following items:

Plants for landscaping
a pub style dining table
tropical decor at reasonable prices

-I'm looking into a pesticide co. quotes, does everyone spray all the time? I havn't seen a bug and nobody has sprayed this place for quite some time...knock on wood.

1. I had the same problem with my Verizon phone. It worked great upstairs, but poorly if at all downstairs. Outside it was fine.

2. Not really that uncommon (anywhere in the area) from my experience. You'll probably find it more common in the "better" areas.

3. Don't know what they are called, but they are pesky!

4. We've been gone for two weeks now, but when we left it was pretty normal (intense!). September isn't much better, but October will start to get nicer.

5. Don't really know what else could be done here. Depending upon where you are going, there may be some good back roads.

6. Having grown up in an area like that, I have gotten used to no one waiving or smiling over the years. This may vary from neighborhood to neighborhood though.

Enjoy your new home!

Congratulations on the move!

I have a dog too and those sticky seeds are a pain. They come and go and are not year round.

As far as the weather, we do have humid days and not so humid days in the summer. If you get the light breeze it is not so bad. The hot weather sticks around until Oct. Although you are a little north of me.

The best place for tropical items for decorating are Beall's Dept. Store or a Beall's Home Store and Dockside.

If you work or join a club or something you will have a better chance of meeting people. Hopefully you will meet some people in your neighborhood.
Enjoy Florida!!

Hi and Welcome!

I have sprint service and the only time my calls drop is when I am in the casino gambling, guess my service is trying to tell me something! I do have Verizon wireless, and it has been great.

Hitchhickers are pesky little buggers, they can be controlled in your yard, but that is about it.

Part of the problem with Florida is that so many back roads are chopped up due to retention ponds, man made lakes and so on. If you tool around you probably will figure out some shortcuts.

I too have noticed that people here are a little more stoic. I have lived in my neighborhood for 6 years and very few people wave. When I lived on Anna Marie Island I found people to be more friendly, really don't understand the reason.

There is a real nice discount home store on Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota, it is in the same shopping center as Big Lots, I think it is a Marshalls store, although not called Marshalls.

Anyhow, they have a fantastic selection of tropical and general household items. I have purchased lamps, kitchen items, bath items and so much more there. Bealls outlets are good too, however, compared to the home store I have mentioned their selection is a lot smaller.

Enjoy your new home, it's a pleasure to meet you!

welcome, we live about 2 miles east of you , if you go straight east about 3 miles on 64 you will find a great nursery for plants and some are as low as a dollar, people do act a little stand-offish here but coming from chicago i can deal with it given a little time some will come around,we use a oldtimer from venice that has customers in lakewood ranch so it's not a problem for him coming here, with your dogs you definitely need your lawn serviced and we also use someone from venice as well and our lawn couldn't look better. verizon works ok here not great i had sprint before and eventually they will cancel you because of the roaming fees they are not charging you for. who are you using for your phone cable and tv please don't tell me brighthouse they were horrible and i switched to verizon, not great either but a lot better then brighthouse. i think we communicted before about pool questions. where were you originally from?

1. I use Verizon and my cell works great. I don't even use a land line any more. On some days, I have had times where the service gets a little weak. I presume it is just that the satelite is in a weak spot, and will move to a better one soon. - Although I could be totally off, and just need to turn the stereo down help me hear better!

2. People asking for spare change here - for me is very random, and doesn't happen very often. When I was in Baltimore - it would happen every where you went. Kids and grown ups were on every corner with a bucket asking for money - for every reason you could think of. Many would jump out wash your window, without asking, and then expect you'd pay them something. . . .

3. I don't know, but when my dog goes into tall grass he gets everything on him, but it usually falls off after about an hour. Often he would get covered in mud, then come in the house, and in an hour he looked like he took a bath. He is an English Springer Spaniel and thier coats do that!! Amazing. . . how much dirt they can spread around the house - if you aren't careful. He's a boy dog!! He loves to fish!! He's hyper!! And, He's very smart, but extremely hard to teach to retrieve a beer from the fridge!! Imagine that!

4. Yep, hot and humid, but not as bad as Maryland. If you have a chance to get out on the water - its a good 10 degrees cooler!

5. Yeah, some alternate routes would be nice. I like driving down Tamiami Trail though. I know a lot of people don't, but you can see a lot of old SWFL Florida still.

6. I still wave and smile. I'm from a small town, and that is what everyone did. I knew everyone and everyone (even if I didn't recognize them - new me). I open up conversations with everyone all the time. It drives my wife nuts! But, that's the way I am.

Don't worry, if you haven't found the bugs, they will find you. I don't have any bug problems here. Every 6 months or so, I buy the pest control that you hook up to your hose, and spray the yard everywhere. Then again once every 6 months or so, I get a bag of pelletized / pulverized bug killer (it kills just about everything) and use a spreader for that. I alternate the times I do each - I'm not very precise, with the times or the amounts (although I try to use the recommended amounts).

You want to make sure you get the fire ants. The rest will pretty much take care of themselves, and if that doesn't work the little lizards will help too! I love seeing them - I have 8 around my lanai now.

I love the tropical fauna as well.

Thanks for all the responses.. 41MAG I'm from as far up north as you can go and moved here for spouses job reloc... I'll def. check out the nursery you mentioned and after reading these posts we decided to go w/Verizon FIOS. If you don't mind my asking who do you get from Venice for the lawn and bugs? Is it the same person from Venice for both? Big House my hubby hates snakes and ran into a small one last night, does your method control them too? I want chemicals that are pet friendly and get the job done if there is such a thing. Thanks for all the great advice!!

i think you will be hard pressed to find a poisonous snake near the water. snakes, except for cottonmouths, run the other way. all the snakes we see around here are corn snakes and black racers. they keep the rodent population under control. yesterday my kids found one tangled up in their cast net. it was about 3 feet long. they carefully cut the net and got it out and let it go. my wife is scared of them also but now realizes that they will run.

Maybe indirectly it helps with snakes. When we first moved here, I would find corn snakes and small ring neck snakes around the house (outside) occasionally. Killing all the bugs, which is their food source has probably caused them to find better hunting grounds. But occasionally I do see black racers in the yard. Of course, they cover a lot of ground, and can run all the way across my yard in seconds if they want to.

So, I wouldn't say it directly effects them, but it helps.
We don't get FIOS here in PGI yet, but when it becomes available, I will get it. I had comcast in MD, but after FIOS got their system up and running, and the bugs out - I got that, and it was much better. We still have times here where the TV signal gets weak with Comcast. Its not a big thing, but it happens now and then.
