My husband was just offered a job in Palmetto. We currently live in a small town outside of Gainesville with a library, post office and grocery store within walking distance. We have four children, and need to find a home quickly or an apartment to rent while we look.

We went down to the area Saturday to look at homes. We looked from Wimauma down to Sarasota. We want to be in an area where we can get a nice home on an acre of land or more. Our main issue is we have two large tortoises as pets and need a home in an area that will allow our tortoises. We are looking for a newer home or at least something with an open floor plan.
We found a home in Sundance that was nice inside, but the neighborhood itself looked a little run down. We found a home nearby in Parrish on 301 that we really liked. Out of all of the areas, we like the Sarasota area the best, but weren't able to find a home that we would enjoy living in. The Sarasota area would allow us closer access to the nice beaches, while living in Parrish would be closer to the museums/aquarium/zoo in Tampa.
Mills Creek had some decent homes, but the yards we saw were very unusable with drop offs down to a creek. We want to stay under $300,000. Our "dream home" in Myakka City sold just a month before the job offer came through.

Any thoughts on Sundance in Wimauma - or living just south of that in Parrish on 301 (not sure about the traffic or being far from a post office/library/grocery store). Are there any neighborhoods with newer homes that don't have strict homeowners rules?

If anyone knows of an affordable apartment with nice amenities for children, we would love to know about it as well. Something with a short lease term as we want to get a home quickly.

You might want to check out the North Port Estates area. It is zoned agriculturally and the parcels are all 3-5 acres. There's plenty of properties for sale under $300k. You would be about 25 minutes from the beaches and 30 minutes from Sarasota.

I think it would be too far from Palmetto though and too much of a commute. We did see several houses online in North Port that were fabulous deals though.

Ahh, yes. I skipped over the Palmetto part. It would be way to far too drive.
