My daughter has spent a lot of time over at Ringling taking their community education classes. She also attends many of their art shows. I do know that they have pretty good campus security. I'll let others comment on the specific area.

Congrats on getting accepted! It's a wonderful school with an excellent reputation in the art world.

A good friend of my daughter's is there and she likes it! She lives in the dorms now. She tried living on her own in a duplex near Jungle Gardens, but someone broke into her place, so she moved out and lives there now. There is some drug and prostitute activity near that area, but there is alot of security on their campus and if you venture out just be careful. As you get further from campus it is a little safer toward the actual city of sarasota, but just as anywhere else you have to be aware. You are from DC, so I'm sure you know how to be cautious! It is a wonderful school with the best reputation and my daughter's friend has made many new friends and I think you will really like it!!

My uncle graduated from Ringling back in the 60's. He now works at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, TX doing their set displays. He says that when he went there it was just a little known college. When he mentions where he attend school in his circle of art friends they all are very impressed. He didn't realize what others thought of Ringling outside of FL.

I am a 2007 graduate, last of Ringling SCHOOL of Art & Design, now college I lived both on and off campus and anything near Old Bradenton Road is not very safe or anywhere near 41 by Walgreens and Goodwill in the local plazas. I'd rather go to Publix on 10th street for anything I might need instead of the CVS or Walgreens personally... My fiance, boyfriend at that time, actually had a gun pulled on him when he crossed the cross walk heading towards the photo labs on Old Bradenton and MLK but this was very late at night as they are open until 2AM. He's pretty street smart and kept his cool but I would say that the majority of the surrounding area is not very safe - you need to be west of the trail and into downtown. It's been cleaned up a lot since I went though. I think in order to make the MOST of your time there is not to rely on the "brand" of the school to get your career off the ground but to get involved in the art community outside the school's "bubble." Sarasota is chock full of artists, designers and other creative businesses, if you can latch on early and scope out an internship on your own you could possibly get a opportunity for your career after graduation. There are lot of links to other major metropolitan areas through creatives in Sarasota and the professors are pretty helpful too. Learn the art of networking and you will rise above the rest. Enjoy all of Sarasota while you study there - the weather is beautiful and there are endless days to explore the area for inspiration and ideas. Florida is fun to play around in.

Default Area around school not so good.

The area just to the East of the school 1/2 mile is dangerous. Area just north is seedy. West and South fair. If students stay right on campus it's o.k. A lot of parents send their daughters and sons here. Kids just need to think safety, and be careful where they go at night. Suggest girls travel the area in twos or more.
