My husband and I have been planning a move to Sarasota for over a year. We appear to be approaching the finish line. But now I feel a bit overwhelmed with the decision of where to live. Although we have visited many times we always stay on Siesta Key and absolutely love it. The bridge situation has given us much concern for full time living.

Schools and sports are the biggest issues for us now. Our boys are 3 & 5 so we have lots of years of baseball, soccer, etc.. ahead of us. Southside appears to be the best as far as scores are concerned (besides Pineview of course) but finding a good rental home for the first year under $1900 a month doesn't look easy in the Southside district. We love the proximity to downtown and Siesta Key but must admit, we have become a bit spoiled with new homes and lots of sq ft.

Feel a lot of pressure to make the right choice in area since I don't want to create too much change for the children. We would like to move to the area / school district we want to ultimately buy a home in and set down roots.

Specific suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My husband and I are coming down next week to look at schools and neighborhoods.

I think it's going to be extremely difficult to find a rental large enough in that price range in the Southside area. I know Ladywithafan lives in that area so you might want to contact her for tips and tricks. I think she does a lot of Craigslist searching but maybe her landlord has other properties in that area.

Other cheaper options would be Southgate or Gulfgate. They're fine and close to the beach they just don't have the same artsy vibe as the Southside area.

I was in same situation but with girls aged 4 and 6. We settled on Gulf gate and found a very nice annual rental for less than your budget, gated with pool on a golf course.
I've found Gulf gate Elementary school to be very helpful so far with questions about registration.
Hope this helps, I drove myself nuts with internet research

Look in Southgate...that is Southside's district too. Phillippi Shores is a good school too. If you go to the Sarasota county school board's site it will give the zip codes that the school zones are in. As far as sports go, there is Cal Ripkin baseball or Twin Lakes which is Central Sarasota Little League. The YMCA offers sports too at many of their locations. Good luck on your search!
