If you're willing to venture into south Manatee county, there's a Macy's Outlet Furniture store in the shopping center on SR70, just west of I75. It's on the north side of the road. By the way, there's also a Bealls and a Bealls Outlet in the same shopping center.

We are getting ready to make an offer on some furniture in a house. It appears to be a few years old and hopefully no dark secrets (aka bedbugs/fleas etc)

Is there a rule of thumb on what to pay for used furniture? Does anyone have any idea on what consignment shops pay and how much they normally markup?

My best guess is that consignment shops pay 25% of what someone can actually go buy something for and start out trying to double their money.

An example using those numbers:

$15,000 worth of furniture can be bought on sale for $12,000 at Macys or ???? So the consignment shop would try buying it for $3,000 and marking it at $6,000 in their store?

Does this make sense at all? Anyone with experience they can share would really help me. Thanks

When my wife was down she was looking in consignment shops and new stores,
but was not finding what she was looking for. She likes the wicker, bamboo styles more of a Florida feel to us. Anyone know of a good place to find this style of furnishings?

As Gomet said, Pomaro Shop definitely has a lot of this sort of stuff, and it is very well-made.

yes, it's a concern everywhere!

but... i just got a dining room set on craigslist. i am just recovering the seats cushions. it was a great deal since i am renting and having a house full of people for thanksgiving! i ditched my dining room set before moving and don't want to really invest in furniture until we buy a house. THis was cheaper than renting or buying a banquet table and folding chairs. Much nicer too. Oak, with 2 leafs/leaves (?) and 6 chairs for $65!

Thanks for replies.
i recently read an article that warned that your new furniture gets shipped in the same trucks used to cart off others used furniture after delivery. in that case you just never know!
